John Law is considered by some to be one of the most brilliant economic minds of his time. However, even he could not fully save France from its economic hardships. His original ideas helped the French economy, but it was not sustainable and resulted in a massive financial and economic collapse.

Zachary Taylor became an important figure in the Mexican-American war. His Battle of Buena Vista gained him wide-spread fame and the city of New Orleans awarded Taylor a medal to commemorate both his Mexican-American War victories and the Battle of Buena Vista.

In 1861, the New Orleans Mint produced half-dollar coinage for three separate governments. One of those governments included the Confederate States of America, which produced four coins.
