Black Diamond, the inspiration for America's iconic nickel
A century ago, the U.S. Mint was preparing to release what would become one of the country's best-loved coin designs. A North American bison named Black Diamond likely served as the model for the coin's iconic reverse.
Events, activities and educational content will focus on the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel (1913-1938), including subjects such as Native American history, animals on coins, the "Renaissance of American Coinage" and the famous 1913 Liberty Head nickel.

Announcement caps successful celebration of the Buffalo Nickel
Adam Leech carves hobo nickels. We invited the Colorado Springs native to give a demonstration of his craft as part of the open house for National Coin Week, and Adam certainly didn't disappoint. We set him up in the conference room, but the audience spilled out into the hall on several occassions.
The Honolulu Coin Club received National Coin Week proclamations from the mayor's office and the city council.
