ANA's Charlotte convention medal features city skyline, city's mint

Images of the Charlotte Mint and the city's skyline are featured on the official medal marking the American Numismatic Association's (ANA) National Money Show in Charlotte, North Carolina, March 21-23, 2003.

"This convention medal is indeed special for the ANA's National Money Show," says ANA Convention Manager Brenda Bishop. "Usually, there is no medal issued for our spring convention, but the local committee worked to get this very nice piece produced.

Proceeds of its sale will benefit the Charlotte Coin Club, which is hosting the ANA show."Designed by Tom Skinner of Charlotte, the silver (.999 fine) medal depicts the city's bright modern skyline of today on the obverse and, on the reverse, the building that once housed the United States Mint in Charlotte in the 19th century and today serves as an art museum.SilverTowne of Winchester, Indiana is minting the 11/4-inch medals. Limited to two per customer, the convention medals can be purchased for $25 (pre-issue price, $23.99, through March 1, 2003), with a $4 shipping and handling fee.

One of the tours planned during the show will explore the Reed Gold Mine, site of the America's first gold rush. Although gold was found on John Reed's farm near Charlotte in 1799, mining operations did not begin until the early 19th century. The gold rush led to the founding of the Charlotte Mint in 1835.

The ANA has arranged discount room rates at The Westin Charlotte (704/375-2623) across the street from the convention center, and the nearby Hampton Inn Charlotte Uptown (704/373-0917). Call the hotels directly to make reservations and mention the show.
