I find 1942 steel penny. was it made, or was it part of 42 group, as copper was used during the war?

If it is plated, a magnet will not hold on to it. If it is steel a magnet will stick to it.

Longstrider I think has the best advice. 7180 also has a good idea which is cheaper. Weigh it! If you know a dealer who's part of the family I would ask him to. If he makes a cheep offer walk out. I would go with the first two suggestions. Mike

How does it compare to the size and weight of the 1943 steel penny?

Hmmm. Well, the Mint did play around quite a bit with different compositions that year, so it could be possible. (Please post a pic!) Check this out; cut and paste the link in your browser: http://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2012/12/unusual-1942-pattern-cents.html

Zinc-coated steel was used in 1943 Lincoln cents. If that is truly a '42, you might thing about sending it into NGC or PCGS or ANACS. Have a local good coin store look at it. Impossible to tell from here.
