Wow, that is a lot of money. That coin passes the 1933 double eagle in price.

Wow that is a lot of money. It also makes I believe the second most expensive coin bought at auction.

Upon further thought I want to change my first comment. If you would have added it to your original blog no one would have seen it.

Didn't a Brasher Doubloon sell for $9,100,000?

I thought one sold for $9,100,000. It says in the Red Book in the top 250 coin auctions.

I agree with Mokie and SHD. The 33' eagle with destroy this record. I would expect to see around 13-15 million for the piece. Thanks for the update (:

For the players who have the means to purchase this coin, I can understand the excitement. For me? While interesting, this auction only elicits a yawn. One of the things the experts continue to tell us is that today's rare coin market is red hot. However, of greater interest to me is whether the rest of the coin market is elevated by riding the rare coin market's coattails. So far as I can tell, not necessarily. That said, there are still many nice buys in the market today for the collector who is patient enough to seek them out!

The Smithsonian has our countries most expensive and rarest coins in there vault. They will never hit the auction block . They will never privately owned. !!

But when the King Farouk '33 Double Eagle hits the block, that record will be obliterated. Just Saying.

I would definitely agree that the 33 double eagle will beat the record. I could see it going for upwards of 15 million.
