This 1883 V nickel were only made in one year and that year is 1883. There were 5,474,300 nickels made at the Philadelphia mint and surprisingly they are made out of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The maker of this coin is named Charles E. Barber

I've got two of these. One of them was found in my legendary purchase of 26 lbs of foreign coins I bought a year ago. Quite the surprise find in a sack of foreign coins!

There is the persistent legend of the gold plated 1183 no-cent nickels being passed for $5 gold pieces but I have never seen one for sale and it makes me doubt it was anything but a 19th century urban myth. Prove me wrong somebody.
