Coin Database

Collecting Tips | user_46252

Those who keep track of their coin collections know what a difficult enterprise that can be. Some use notebooks, while others use spreadsheets, and some use generic collection software, while still others don't keep track of what they have. As a lifelong technologist, I am in the process of creating a Microsoft Access database that allows one to easily select the coins in a collection from a catalogue of (currently) U.S. coins. This project began in earnest recently, and I hope to have the catalogue complete by end of 2021. A user would select their coins from the catalogue to identify them uniquely by ID, grade, and other attributes. Images of the obverse, reverse, rim, and closeups of actual coins can also be attached. Sets will be featured so that a user can run a report of those coins needed to complete a set, and to compile a budget for doing so. The end result enhances the security of a collection from an insurance point of view, allows for tracking the collection as an investment, and provides the collector with a means of sharing their collection virtually with others. For dealers, this software could track inventory, as it allows duplicates to be recorded with individual attributes. Those whose items or entire collection is physically on loan to others or institutions can track this process. I believe data is our ally in making collecting rewarding, and I'm looking forward to completing this project and placing it in the hands of beta-testers for feedback. Let me know your thoughts, ideas, and wish lists for this project, and if you'd like to participate in the beta test later this year. Cheers!

That sounds like a big project. Sign me up. I use and excel and just word for mine. Very unsatisfactory. For me, I would like to see Peace dollar VAM listings. Might as well do Morgan VAMs since most people do them. Good luck and sign me up. I was a beta tester for this site years ago. Thanks.

Hi how are you. The Mint plays games . They have upped all there prices. And with special coins there system crashes. This is going on for years. They claim they have fixed the problem of ordering. But i still had problems the other day. For instance the new gold coins came out mintage five thousand. You won't get threw and they sell bulk coins to big companies. So the mintage is not what it says. My first message the other day was a problem. Then something I never saw on there site I am not a robot and had to pick three planes. This is the way to do bussiness. They changed what I first ordered I wanted a Morgan from San Fran. My screen blinked two from Denver. Wait till the Peace Dollar comes out on the tenth. We will see . Two hundred thousand. Twenty million collectors. What are the odds! Thank you my friend. I'm glad your relatives recovered. I never will. One day at a time. Thanks for.asking good luck.

It is worth the effort to keep track of what is in your collection.

As you've mentioned I've use a simple spread sheet for the past twenty-three years. I bought a cd program back in the late nineties and tried a downloadable version maybe ten years ago. Neither seemed adequate enough. From what I'm reading your ideas are exactly what I've found lacking as far as recordable software. Something I would certainly consider trying.

Good luck with your project. I wrote a review of two software inventory systems last year. You might see what I liked and didn't like about them. I'd be interested in being a beta tester for your software. Glad you are here!

I certainly need a better tally of what I collect. And need to downsize the part of collection I dont need or have accumulated.

Hi Mike! Sorry to hear about your trauma. Both my sister's and my wife's ex-husbands suffered with that, but both have recovered and are well. Let me know what Boycott the Mint is all about. Thanks!
