The book starts off by talking about a grandpa who is a coin collector himself, passing on the interest to his grandson. The grandson takes his grandpa’s coins to school. There is a narration of how a classroom of kids look at cool unusual coins of different shapes and sizes, how it excites the kids to see money from around the world. There is a mention of the ‘Three-legged Money Frog’ used in China as a symbol of being rich. The book explains to a beginner to coin collecting about how strange things like cow, shell, etc. were used as currency prior to the use of metal coin and paper money. There are tips on how to start one’s own collection; and how money can help understand history and culture of various countries. The book is 48 pages long and it will help to introduce the world of numismatics to a person getting started with coin collecting.

New Successful Coin Hunting - Charles L Garrett-Book ReviewThe book says that it discusses newer ways to detect coins using a metal detector but the book itself is outdated as it was published in the year1989. It does have information that is appropriate till date. This book is a revised version which includes information on computerized detectors. There are tips on what are the do’s and don’t of coin hunting using metal detectors. There is a section on how to find out where to look for coins, how to locate gold coins. The author talks about finding more coins with less effort. The book has general information with 260 pages and this book is suitable for a beginner collector as well. From the read, the author Charles L Garrett appears to be well known among coin hunters and there is a personal brand of metal detector known by his name. Overall, this book is an easy and informative read.

I got interested in this book by watching a video of treasure hunting using a metal detector. This book talks about how to choose the best metal detector, and the author has suggestions on how to choose where to do the search for old coins and why certain locations are better. Such searches in the past have helped discover ancient and early american coins, old jewelry, utensils, and other artifacts. The book suggests how to safely clean the old coins and store them away from the environment. There are tips on how one could sell the finds.
