Coin verification

Coins-World | user_63594

Can my fellow members recommend a set of tools to help determine coin diameter and weight specifications? I found only one 1970 Spain coin set for sale in over 10 years of curating my World Birth Year Set. The seller had a good rating and the negative ratings did not deal with counterfeit or altered items with the only concern being a no returns, all sales final policy. I gambled and bought the set. I weighed the three key coins from the set without a match to the Krause publication figures. I am trying to save the $39.00 fee per coin by sending them to a third party grading service only to have them come back in a body bag. If I can be reasonably sure they are genuine, I will spend the money to have them authenticated but need a way to get to that point. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

I sent you a message, but in case you don't get it....Do you belong to any coin forums other than here. I haven't used the forums here really, but I belong to the PCGS, NGC, and CCF ( coin community family forums). Any and all have experts in world coins and you can post pics with questions.

Thanks so much for the reply! I did not think to search the other forums. I do not get on too much so have not yet explored this site. I have some time to get on more and see I can get replies so will be on more. I did a dealer search years ago and found 10 dealers who listed world coins to contact via email. Of those 10 only 1 replied! That dealer stated he did not have the time to look for these key dates I need.

I also agree with Longstrider. A good scale and a reliable pair of calipers are a must for any coin collector.

Thank you for the advise. Can you recommend a brand that is moderately priced and reliable?

The $17 special from NGC that Pat mentioned is the fee for "Modern" coins, which I believe also begins with 1970 dates, so you may be in luck. I recall there is a minimum of 5 coins per order.

Thanks for the heads up. I will keep a closer eye on the NGC emails for sales on submissions.

As Longstrider said, try a scale, or bring it to anyone dealer

Thanks for your advise. I will have to do some research on dealers in my area that specialize in world coins. The closest one to me is a general US dealer. He has some world coins for sale but it is a small section of his display cases. I asked him if he would do a want list and he said he did not have the time. I guess another dealer will get my business. One who does have the time to look for my coins.

totally agree with Longstrider. Those are my go to tools, and not that expensive of an investment.

Thank you for the comment. I will investigate the prices. I have some Amazon gift cards to help offset the cost!

A digital scale that weighs to .001 grams and a good pair of calipers is all I use. When in doubt, don't.. Good luck.

Thank you for the advise! My scale goes to two decimal places but the number is significantly off in the tenths column that going to the thousandths would not make a difference. I will keep an eye open for the scale to upgrade.

Reset your scale. Bring it to a dealer or send it in. The ANA has a deal I don't what it is with NGC and it cost $17.00 I don't have my form I think it's the same for world coins. Did you buy it of ebay? Did you read the negative comments? How many did he have. If he had one that's one to many for me. None of my sellers has one complaint. And if I see something I like that's the first place I check. If they have complaints I keep going. You have to read them. Plenty of good sellers without complaints. Lots of luck I hope it turns out I'm for you.

Thank you for your advise! I did buy it off of EBay and read the negative comments. None of them dealt with counterfeit or fake items and they were very few in number. I think he had a 96 or 98 feedback score. Unfortunately, I have to be a little more lenient in my selection process as the items I need are rarely/never up for sale. LIke I said, this is the first set I found for sale in 10 years of searching. Even the rare coins for that year are not up for sale - ever!
