NGC vs. PCGS

Do you prefer to have your coins graded by NGC or PCGS? Why do you prefer your choice?

I submit to ANACS because they attend coin shows and have submission deals like 10 coins for 120 dollars. I actually like NGC holders better than PCGS holders for appearance. If I am trying to purchase a type of coin, like Liberty nickels, i would try to purchase one type of holder to keep the set uniform as far as holder. I hear PCGS is better at grading and might command better prices? Some people buy coins in older style holders because the grading service doesn't use those holders anymore. Some people collect the holders in all styles they can find. If I had to choose today, I would choose NGC. I just prefer the look and size of the holder and trust the grade also.

I like the style of ANACS holders but they feel flimsier and if I want to unslab, they are much easier than PCGS or NGC to open.  In fact, from my experience, NGC are the hardest of the three to open.  So I mostly buy ANACS or NGC slabs nowadays, I have never liked the look of PCGS holders and I think their reputation is mostly good publicity and not reality.

This is a simple one for me. Figures show that P.C.G.S is very liberal with there grading. Second. The Smithsonian Institute tested the top three grading companys slabs. It was NGC they chose to put 300 of our  countrys most valuable and rarest coins . To me thats good enough.

If I send something in which is rare, I use NGC. It's a benefit for us as members here. I also like ANACS for my varieties as well as VarSlab if I don't want a grade.

I prefer NGC for its looks and strength.  Any of the top 3 grading agencies are closely matched in their grading of coins.

PCGS and NGC are realistically the two companies in the top tier of slabs, as far as not overgrading, and market value go. If I'm going to choose one for submitting,I would go with NGC, because the membership is free with an ANA membership, and the market values are around the same as a PCGS holder, so there's no reason in that aspect for me to pay more to get  a PCGS membership. When buying, I'll go with either, and focus on the coins condition and appearance (I won't buy slabs of lower tier companies; unless the price is the same raw, because I would literally just crack open the slab after purchase). I think the better looking slab depends on the coin inside

@MikeB What data are you referring to with figures that show PCGS is more liberal with their grading?

I would rather buy a NGC graded slab, but would rather sell a PCGS graded slab. Not any particular piece, but take 20 exact grades of a particular coin from both NGC and PCGS, total up the amount of sell prices, PCGS is usually the higher. Note; if I had a piece in a PCGS slab worth a $1000 or more and thought that the returned grade was too low, I wouldn't dare crack it and send to NGC. If I thought the returned slab from NGC was under graded, then I might consider cracking the slab and submit to PCGs. In my opinion, PCGS is a little more forgiving/lenient than NGC, particularly with gold pieces, $3 gold Indian Princess being a good example. That's just how I perceive it, and that said, 5 years from now, might flip flop on that. Now if I can just figure out how to buy a NGC slab and sell it PCGS labeled. Hmmm? Never mind.

I tried A.NACS. If you want a variety send it there. I stoped. I sent a coin to be graded. It came back as a DD. I sent it to NGC no variety but a ms 67. I sent another cent. It came back with three sets of letters the last three i knew. L.D.S. Late day strike.the two other sets customer servivce didn't know so i asked for a supervisor. He didnt know. Here is the best i bought the set of the Lincoln cents. The proof S all received MS 70. The P.D graded 67 all of them and no cert numbers. So i called them. I saw them on the net like that and ebay. Were so sorry we made a mistake. .ya think. Mail them to us and we will do it free. No thanks. It was hundreds of sets. My Dad always told me you get what you pay for. 10.00 sorry not me. I didnt mention the other two. Thats my dealing with them Others enjoy there work. Nothing wrong with that. Go were you like. We buy what we like. They do good jobs also. My friend has not had a problem.
