I am very new to collecting.
I have begun with reading some coin books to educate myself before a begin purchasing coins. I am a member on the PCGS website with the intention of registering a coin collection.
Because of my inexperience, i have a question about coin choices.
My intention is to start a Complete US Coin Design Set;
1. how do collectors chose a specific year and grade for each type.
2. Where do i find information on the specifics of each year of a type that gives me information to make a solid educated choice.
Thanks,

1. What do you mean by choose? Do you mean buy? If so, my understanding is that you simply buy the coin in a PCGS holder (or put it in one), and then register that on the website. Please specify your question.

For example, Indian Head small cents (1859-1909) What makes a specific year more desirable than another, in respects to quality example. I see blurbs on how sum specific dates of coins are rarer and more sought after and I am trying to find out how to educate myself. So that i can build a good quality type set.

Hi! Welcome to the hobby. It will bring you places you never been to. It will teach you history about this great country you never learned in school. My mentor told m years ago let your eyes do the walking. Pick out coins that appeal to you for there art. Also coins that you can keep wit in a budget. I followed those two pieces of information and years later I have a collection I'm very proud of. People can't believe what I have collected over the years. By buying books on the subject first is a great start. We always say buy the book before the coin. I would strongly recommend the deluxe red book. It's 1500 pges long and covers just about everything. The history of the coin. Who designed it .price list,on and on. The one piece of advice I can give you. Do not let salesman or dealers lead you into panic buying! In other words they tell you ,you have to have this coin it will do nothing but go up in price. I hope these few tips help you on your journey. Lots of luck.Mike or number7249.
