NATIONAL GOLD EXCHANGE TO SPONSOR DEALER
DINNER AT ANA SALT LAKE CITY SHOW IN HONOR OF
GERALD BAUMAN
National Gold Exchange Inc., of Tampa, Florida, is
sponsoring a dinner for dealers with bourse tables at the American
Numismatic Association's (ANA) National Money Show™ 2001 in
Salt Lake City, Utah, March 8-10.
"We want to do this dinner in honor of Gerald Bauman,
who has been involved for many, many years in numismatics and
is seriously ill," says Mark Yaffe of National Gold Exchange.
"Jerry has been a great friend to many of us in the business, and
we wanted to demonstrate our appreciation for this wonderful
numismatist."
The informal dinner will be held Wednesday evening,
March 7, during dealer setup on the bourse floor. ANA staff
members will assist in serving the meal.
"The dinner is a nice way to say thank you to the dealers
attending our spring convention," says ANA Convention Services
Manager Brenda Bishop. "This will mark our fourth year, and we
are pleased that National Gold Exchange is sponsoring this year's
event."
Bauman, 64, was the head of MTB's Numismatic Division
in New York City for about 15 years. Trained as an engineer,
Bauman worked in NASA's space program as a designer for
Grumman Aircraft before entering numismatics. He worked for
Stack's and Hans Schulman in New York before joining the staff
at MTB. One of his specialties was the detection of counterfeit
coins. He retired in the early 1990s.
Jerry Treglia, a coin dealer who has know Bauman since the
early 1960s, says, "We met when I was 15, and we helped each
other learn about numismatics, since there was not too much
information available then. He always was helpful, even when I
went into the business. He handled everything that you find in the
'Red Book' (A Guide Book of United States Coins)."
Mitchell Patina, who worked at MTB with Bauman, says,
"Jerry is a great guy. He knew about all coins, United States and
foreign. He worked with the most common to the extremely rare,
and was always willing to teach what he knew."
David Akers, a coin dealer and friend of Bauman's for more
than 25 years, says, "Jerry is funny, good man with a heart of gold.
One of the best numismatists I know, and yet he is very
underrated. He is not a self-promoter and has not gotten the
recognition he deserves."
National Gold's Mark Yaffe adds that Bauman "would bend
over backwards to help people. He was a tough businessman, but
very friendly with everyone and always willing to lend a hand."
National Gold Exchange's $5,000 sponsorship of the dealer
dinner is part of the $48,900 donated by dealers and members to
support activities at the National Money Show 2001.
