National Money Show™ Puts Education in the Forefront
April 10 Set as “Appraisal Day” for the
Public
(Colorado Springs, CO) -- Throughout its
114-
year history, the American Numismatic Association has
promoted numismatic education. Thousands
attend the organization’s seminars and presentations.
Many go on to join the ANA and to get involved at the
club and national level.
“Education really is core to our mission,”
said ANA
Executive Director, Christopher Cipoletti.
“Through presentations at ANA annual shows many are introduced to
the hobby, and we are constantly looking for ways to reach new
numismatic audiences.
Director of Education, Gail Baker, describes this
year’s ANA National Money Show™ educational line-up and
public learning opportunities as greater than ever. “We’re very encouraged
thanks to the U.S. Mint State Quarter™program and the Bureau of
Engraving and Printing’s recently-introduced color changes on U.S.
currency. The public is now really looking at their money. We want to
expand that interest. Money really does tell a
story.”
Coin Collecting Basics classes, always an ANA program
favorite, attract dozens of parents, children, Boy and Girl Scout Merit
Badge candidates as well as interested adults each year. Introductory
classes will be offered daily from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m.
“The course is designed with new collectors in
mind and addresses many of those questions that are so common when you
start in the hobby. We offer a friendly atmosphere with lots of
interactive discussion and hands-on activities. This course is
especially well suited for families,” said Dr. Lane J. Brunner,
ANA Numismatic Curriculum Director.
Brunner also points out that a pre-show Intro to Coin
Grading course will be offered, but participants must
pre-register. Cost for the advanced seminar
is $350 for members and $450 for non-members.
Both Baker and Brunner note increasing interest in the
hobby. Baker also sees a dramatic increase
in the quantity and quality of educational exhibits.
“Today’s competitive exhibits are
phenomenal. Just look at the quality of
educational content and items on display – exhibits people will
never see anywhere else. Every participant
collects in different ways and the result is a fascinating mix of
geographical, design, historical and personal exhibits that reflect the
diverse interests of our members,” she said. “And
that’s in addition to special Money Museum exhibits we offer as
well.”
Included in this year’s featured ANA exhibits
will be coins and currency from the upcoming Money Museum
“Oops: Mistakes on Money”
exhibit as well as Brasher Doubloons, gold coins hand-struck in 1787 by
George Washington’s New York City neighbor, Ephraim
Brasher. In addition, visitors can view a
1794 U.S. silver dollar -- possibly the first ever struck -- and two of
the known 1913 V (Liberty Head) nickels.
A complete list of educational classes,
numismatic programs and free family activities is attached. The
2005 National Money Show will be located at the Crown Center Exhibit
Hall in downtown Kansas City and will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30
p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 and from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. on Sunday, April 10.
