New Orleans chosen as 2013 Spring National Money Show site
New Orleans was selected as the site for the 2013 Spring National
Money ShowSM by the American Numismatic Association Board of Governors during a
Tuesday teleconference meeting. The show will be held May 9-11 at the Ernest N.
Morial Convention Center.
Proposals from five cities were evaluated: Atlanta, Boston,
Indianapolis, New Orleans and Portland. After an initial straw poll, Boston,
Indianapolis and New Orleans emerged as favorites.
An initial motion failed to receive enough votes. Upon reconsideration,
the motion to approve New Orleans passed 7-0. Govs. Wendell Wolka and Gary
Adkins were absent.
The board considered the following factors: availability of the
city and show dates, access to major flights, convention center rental fees,
hotel costs and availability as well as the area’s collector base.
Early bird admissions were reinstated at future ANA conventions by
a 7-0 vote. The decision was the culmination of several months of research and
discussion, with the board surveying ANA-member dealers and soliciting feedback
from ANA members.
The board made a recommendation that early birds be given access
to the bourse during dealer hours, from 8-10 a.m., on all days except setup
day. The board recommended early bird badge fees of $150 for the World’s Fair
of MoneySM and $100 for National Money Shows.
The Chicago Coin Club was named host club for the 2013 World’s
Fair of Money.
In other convention news, ANA AuctionSM was approved by the U.S.
Patent Office as a service mark for the ANA to be used in the advertising and
promotion of the Association’s auctions.
Awards
The board voted 7-0 to approve a new, uncategorized award for
exhibits involving women and numismatics for a three-year trial period at the
World’s Fair of Money.
Funded by an anonymous donor, the award would recognize exhibits
on subjects such as women depicted on coins, coins or paper money designed by
women or women who have contributed to numismatics through their research,
publishing or curatorial responsibilities.
Capital
budget
The board approved a 2012 capital budget totaling $144,070. Major
items included estimated repairs to the aging HVAC system at ANA headquarters,
computer equipment and traveling exhibit cases.
“The items (in the capital budget) prove to be either necessary or
prudent business. There are things we need to replace on a periodic basis,” ANA
Treasurer Larry Baber advised the board.
The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered
