ANA and Las Vegas show launch new era in coin hobby

(San Francisco, California) – Officials of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) and organizers of the Las Vegas Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Show today announced creation of the “ANA Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Show in Las Vegas.” The three-day event will be open to the public, Friday through Sunday, October 28 – 30, 2005, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino Convention Center.

“This is an exciting new era for the hobby, combining the ANA’s primary mission of numismatic education with the resources of a successful commercial show to expand opportunities for collectors and dealers, and introduce the hobby to the public,” said Christopher Cipoletti, ANA Executive Director.

Sponsored by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), the ANA’s official grading service, the Las Vegas show will feature introductory and advanced educational seminars conducted by ANA staff. Educational exhibits at the October show will include the unique 1787 Brasher Doubloon with punch mark on the eagle’s breast displayed by Rare Coin Wholesalers. Bowers and Merena and Teletrade will conduct public auctions in conjunction with the show. NGC will provide on-site grading.

“The ANA will provide a mix of seminar topics, from continuing numismatic education for intermediate and advanced collectors and dealers, such as grading and counterfeit detection, to beginners’ courses designed to introduce coin collecting to children and adults,” explained Cipoletti.

Specific seminar topics for the October show will be announced later.

“The ANA plays a crucial role in the advancement of numismatics. To encourage people to support the organization, we will give away $10,000 in door prizes to lucky attendees who either sign up to join the ANA or renew their memberships at the show,” said Robert Brueggeman of the Las Vegas Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Show.

Dealers who purchase bourse tables at the October Las Vegas show will receive from the ANA a half star for a regular table and a full star for a corner table. The star system is used by the organization to help determine bourse table placements at the association’s annual conventions, the National Money ShowTM and the World’s Fair of Money®.

Announcement of the joint venture was made in San Francisco, July 27, on the opening day of the ANA World’s Fair of Money® convention.
