Submission Information for Authors

THE MISSION OF The Numismatist and the Reading Room is to educate and provide a forum for exchanging ideas. It serves as a refreshing review for the experienced collector and as an introduction to essential concepts for the less experienced. The ANA’s staff and contributing editors welcome the opportunity to review well-written, well-conceived articles displaying original, documented research.

Authors of articles published in the magazine receive $.15 per word and $2.75 for each usable photograph, illustration and numismatic material sent for photographic reproduction. Incidental expenses incurred by the author in preparation of an article may be reimbursed, subject to prior approval.

Articles published in The Numismatist are eligible for the Heath Literary Award, which is presented annually to authors whose articles are deemed to be outstanding contributions to the ANA’s official magazine. A silver medal and $250 is awarded for first place, a bronze medal and $100 for second place and a bronze medal for third place.

Articles displaying original and comprehensive research in U.S. numismatics are eligible for the Wayte and Olga Raymond Memorial Award, which includes a prize of $400 for first place and $200 for second. Articles about United States bank notes are considered for the Catherine Sheehan Award for U.S. Paper Money Studies, with $50 going to first place. The Prue and Arthur Fitts Literary Award for Ancient and Medieval Coinage Studies recognizes literary excellence in those fields. First-place winners receive $250 and a plaque, while second and third place receive a certificate.

MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts submitted to The Numismatist should be relevant to the study of numismatics, present new information, and/or contribute to numismatic education. The suggested article length is 1,200 to 3,200 words. Comprehensive articles with extensive original research and primary sources should be no more than 4,000 words.

Reading Room manuscripts should focus on tips for new and budget-minded collectors, current trends, and engaging stories that haven’t previously been featured in The Numismatist or elsewhere. The suggested article length is 600 to 900 words.

For quicker response time and to better your article’s chance of being accepted, submit a three to five-sentence pitch to editor@money.org that outlines your article and sources to be used before you begin writing your article.

The author is directly responsible for all statements made in the manuscript. The American Numismatic Association purchases first North American serial rights and reserves the right to reproduce the article electronically. Manuscripts are accepted with the understanding that they have not been submitted to or published by other publications. Manuscripts should be typed and double-spaced (upper and lower case) as a Microsoft Word or Google Doc. Submissions will only be accepted via email. Computer printouts/handwritten articles will not be accepted. The author’s name, email, phone number, and ANA member number should be included on the article’s first page.

Manuscripts, including illustrations, should be emailed to <editor@money.org. The author should retain a copy of the manuscript for reference. The Publications Department reserves the right to edit all material.

ILLUSTRATIONS

Photographs should be high-quality, glossy prints or high-resolution (300 DPI) scans (TIFF or JPEG format). Legends or captions should be typed on a separate Microsoft Word document or Google Doc with a number that accurately corresponds to each illustration.

The face of the photographs should not be retouched or labeled in any way. If an author lacks photographic equipment or facilities, numismatic material can be sent to The Numismatist for reproduction (email editor@money.org for more information).

AUTHOR’S BIOGRAPHY

Authors should submit a brief biography (100 words or less) that includes pertinent information, such as place of birth, professional background, hobby interests and affiliations, and numismatic awards or accomplishments.
