ANA BOARD OF GOVERNORS VOTES TO BUILD NEW WEBSITE, REPLACE DATABASE

The American Numismatic Association will go forward with plans to replace its membership database and build a new, dynamic website after the Board of Governors voted unanimously on Aug. 16 to authorize the expenditure.

The 9-0 vote came during the final meeting of the 2011-13 board held at the recent 2013 World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Ill.

“The board made a united, magnanimous decision – an historic investment in the future for its membership to be more relevant and add more member value so it can become the premier, go-to educational resource in numismatics our founders envisioned,” said new ANA President Walter Ostromecki, who served as Vice President on the 2011-13 board. “In the next year, we’ll have a medium that will allow us to better connect and educate collectors all over the world.”

Project costs are expected to run between $600,000 and $700,000 for the website and database. Investment revenue will cover the initial cost of the project. The current database was first installed at the ANA in 2004 along with the current website.

“This is a wonderful investment in the future of the ANA,” said Executive Director Kim Kiick. “We will replace the current Money.org with a dynamic, well-designed, easy-to-use and – most importantly – reliable website that will give our members access to a wide variety of valuable material.”

Members of the Technology Advisory Committee and the ANA staff began developing and evaluating various technology companies beginning in February.  In all, more than 30 companies were evaluated over a five-month period.

The Board of Governors stressed the need to develop original, educational content for the new site before voting to build the website.

OTHER BOARD BUSINESS

The Board of Governors selected the Chicago Coin Club to be the host club for the 2014 World’s Fair of Money. The club also served as the hosts for the 2011 and 2013 shows. William Burd was selected to be the host chairman.

The board also approved a slight procedural change for nominations to the Numismatic Hall of Fame.  Three supportive recommendations by permanent members of the Hall of Fame council are now required in order to put a nomination up for a vote.

The three Governor-elects – Jeff Swindling, Laura Sperber and Ralph Ross – were present for the meeting.
