ANA board renews Executive Director’s contract

The American Numismatic Association’s (ANA) Board of Governors, meeting at the Association’s 109th Anniversary Convention in Philadelphia, August 9-13, renewed the contract of ANA Executive Director Edward C. Rochette.

“The Board recognizes that its proposed plans to remodel the ANA headquarters building in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the need to proceed to a satisfactory settlement on the lawsuit pending against the Association should be shepherded by Ed Rochette,” President H. Robert Campbell says. “Ed has been involved with both and is the logical choice to address these important issues.”

During its meeting, the Board heard plans to remodel the ANA library and museum, increasing space and accessibility. Two auction houses, Superior Galleries, Inc., of Beverly Hills California, and Stacks’ Sales Inc., of New York, City, filed a lawsuit in 1998 against the ANA in United States District Court regarding the Association’s auction practices.

Last month, Campbell announced that the Board was forming a search committee to find a replacement for Rochette, whose current contract expires on July 31, 2001.

“The Board discussed this search and felt it was in the best interest of the ANA to retain Ed for another year,” Campbell says.

Rochette says, “Our organization is very sound; our finances are probably in the best shape they have been in years; and the staff is unquestionably the finest I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with.”

Rochette, who served 20 years on the ANA staff (1966-86) – both as executive director and editor of The Numismatist – and six years on the Board of Governors (1987-93), was asked by the Board in July 1998 to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Association on an interim basis. Last year, the Board offered him a contract to serve two years as executive director.

With this contract renewal, Rochette will serve until July 31, 2002.
