Rosemont, Illinois — Philadelphia was chosen as
the host city for the 2018 World’s Fair of MoneySM after a 7-0-1
vote by the American Numismatic Association Board of Governors at its regular
meeting on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the 2014 Chicago World’s Fair of Money held at
the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.
According to Rhonda Scurek, ANA Convention
Director, several labor issues experienced at the Pennsylvania Convention Center
during the 2012 World’s Fair of Money have improved over the last six months.
Because of new labor contracts, exhibitors will be allowed to unload their own
vehicles, set up their own booths that are 600 square feet or less and operate
electric screwdrivers. Scurek added that she had also secured a discounted
hotel rate.
The board voted 7-0-1 for Philadelphia with
Governor Mike Ellis abstaining, stating that he favored a convention
Washington, D.C. Vice President Jeff Garrett arrived to the meeting late and
did not participate in this vote.
The board also heard a proposal from Carl Wolf and
the Chicago Coin Club to bring the 2019 World’s Fair of Money back to Chicago
for what will be the club’s 100th anniversary year. The board said
it would take the proposal under consideration but took no action at the
meeting.
During the Executive Director report, Kim Kiick
reported that the ANA had raised more than $18,000 during its silent auction at
the Membership Awards Banquet. The full total, $18,918, will be used to fund
the Robert Lecce Advanced Scholarship Fund. Kiick also reported that the ANA
has received $159,688 in total donations so far this fiscal year, through May
16.
Kiick noted other fundraising projects, including
that the ANA is now an approved charity through the Combined Federal Campaign.
The ANA has also been set up to receive donations through Amazon.com’s Smiles
program.
In other
business, the board:
- Approved the ANA Strategic Plan for 2014-15.
- Heard a report on the ANA’s audited financial status, which shows that the ANA’s assets grew by more than $4 million from fiscal year 2012 to 2013. The board accepted the audit and the annual 990 report on unanimous votes.
- Approved a new library lending policy that will increase penalties for late and overdue books.
- Approved individual sponsorships for the World’s Fair of Money that totaled more than $10,000.
- Approved the appointment of Hannah Powell as the Young Numismatist Intern to the Board of Governors. The YN Intern spends six months as an ex-officio member of the board to represent issues pertinent to younger collectors. She replaces Katie Reinders, whose six-month term was complete.
The American Numismatic Association is a
