ANA SEEKS DONATIONS OF MORGAN SILVER DOLLARS

COINS OF ALL GRADES SOUGHT FOR NEW EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVE

Morgan silver dollar collectors can help ensure that this magnificent coin series is forever preserved for future generations to enjoy and study through a program spearheaded by former American Numismatic Association Gov. Michael Fey.

Fey is asking collectors to donate Morgans of various dates, varieties and grades for the program. The coins will be used as hands-on learning tools for Summer Seminar courses.

“The ANA and the Morgan dollar collector and dealer community have a common interest in educating newcomers, as well as advanced numismatists, about the many benefits of collecting and studying silver dollars,” said Fey, a longtime instructor at Summer Seminar. “The problem we face in teaching courses on this topic is the huge inventory of Morgan dollars needed to do a thorough job.”

Fey is donating 83 of his coins to kick off the program, as well as numerous VAM books to the Dwight N. Manley Numismatic Library. He’s hoping other dealers and collectors will follow his lead. And while high-grade specimens are always appreciated, especially for public displays, circulated examples will prove just as valuable for educational efforts.

“This will make a wonderful addition to our educational efforts,” said Douglas Mudd, curator at the Money Museum. “Being able to actually handle Morgan silver dollars during our Summer Seminar courses will only enrich the quality of instruction and make for a better learning environment.”

HOW TO DONATE

These in-kind donations are tax-deductible. Donors will be recognized in The Numismatist for their donations. Additionally, donors will be recognized online at VAMworld.com/anaproject.

The Society of Silver Dollar Collectors and the National Silver Dollar Roundtable have been enlisted to help with the donation process. A list of desired coins, which will be updated regularly, is available at Vamworld.com/anaproject, along with procedures for how to donate.
