Finding something new
While roaming the convention floor at a major coin show, I always pick up the many premiums available, such as pens, candy, price lists, and a catalog or two.
One beautifully done catalog caught my eye. A collection of Hard Times tokens was offered at auction. The cover featured one of the most popular tokens, showing a turtle with the Treasury on its back. I picked up the catalog and looked through it. I never knew of the variety, the history, of Hard Times tokens. Many auction catalogs are reference books in themselves, and this one was a prime example. Background, history, and detailed photos, including many enlarged photos, appeared throughout the catalog.
Thus was born a new collecting interest.
There are many series to collect, United States, World coins, tokens, medals, paper money. Looking through a well-done auction catalog can ignite the new interest.

I love the old auction catalogs. I've been known to purchase some nicely done ones for an upcoming auction! Thanks!

Also, The auction catalogs are a great way to see the items as the are/were at that very moment & a history of the price point at that time slot - Those things are great
