What are special Government medals?

Medals | DrDarryl

The images in this blog are from the Annual Report of the Director of the Mint from the years 1957 through 1962. The Bureau of the Mint provided a function to manufacture special Government medals (sGm). The other functions of the Bureau of the Mint was to manufacture coinage for commerce and national commemorative medals (NCM). 1957 image - NCM (term historical) and sGm are mentioned1958 image - NCM (term historical) and sGm are mentioned1959 image - NCM (term historical) and sGm are mentioned1960 image - NCM (term historical) and sGm are mentioned1961 image - NCM (term historical) and sGm are mentioned1962 image - A change in terms. Medals of national character (NCM) and  special medals for United States Government agencies (sGm).These images provides evidence that the Bureau of the Mint had three functions in the manufacture realm:1. Manufacture coins for commerce (domestic and foreign)2. Manufacture national medals3. Manufacture special Government medals General numismatic information has been readily available for coins of commerce and national medals. Special Government medals are without general numismatic information and this is due to its unacknowledged status by the Bureau of the Mint. Do you know why sGm have an unacknowledged status? sGm are a product of a joint inter-agency effort (acquiring US Government  agency and the Bureau of the Mint).  The Bureau of the Mint enforces confidentiality of this joint inter-agency effort, hence no releasing of information to the public.

Found Presidential Medal Reinforces My Numismatic Research

Medals | DrDarryl

During the writing of my book, Authoritative Numismatic Reference: Presidential Medal of AppreciationTM Award Medals 1958 - 1963, ISBN: 1511786744, I contacted  the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library & Museum for images of a bronze medal that was awarded from President Eisenhower to then Vice-President Nixon. I felt that is was appropriate to email a working draft Chapter 7 to assist the library in locating this medal. It provided the physical traits and historical information based on previously sequestered White House records.  I also created a rendition of the medal based on these White House Records.

United States Mint® numismatic discoveries has been limited to the physical identification of a new error, new variety, or newly found hoard. The discovery of an entirely undocumented United States Mint® series is virtually unheard of in U.S. numismatics; however this seemingly impossible feat has been achieved. An entire United States Mint® series has been discovered and cataloged for the very first time.

A Helping Hand to Philippines Numismatists

Medals | DrDarryl

Accurate mintage provided to Honeycutt H-525 & Basso B-898. See image. DDE-12 (medal in image) information taken from my book: The Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals, ISBN 1495348229. The Philippines numismatic reference books cataloged the Eisenhower visit medal, but does not provide additional information. DDE-12 was struck by the US Mint in Philadelphia. Obverse and reverse designs by Frank Gasparro. Medal was used during President Eisenhower's trip to Taiwan, Philippines, and State of Alaska. Base on my research notes, roughly 225 medals were distributed in the Philippines. This is a very interesting US Mint medal series now that it has been uncovered after being hidden for over 5 decades. Standard US silver dollar planchets were used for the medal. Google "NGC Registry Eisenhower POTUS Appreciation Medals" to see more extractions from my book.Dr. Honeycutt was provided with my DDE-12 information and he indicated it will be included on his next book update. Medal in the image is in my personal collection.
