Philadelphia World’s Fair of Money Morgan Dollar Adds

Coins-United States | FortWorthCollector

I set out for Philadelphia this August with a very specific mission to find a Proof Morgan Dollar to add to my collection. My thinking was since it would be a large east coast show that this would be the best time and place to go looking. I thought it would be a piece of cake to find a lot of examples and narrow them down to a few nice specimens in my price range and pick. As it would turn out the easy part was narrowing them down not finding them. When I could find them they where either too toned & rough for my taste or too high a grade & price. As luck would have it though my regular dealer had brought a beautiful 1904 PR-64 that is just amazing. It does have a slight golden brown tone but nothing that distracts from its surface and I couldn’t be more happy to add it to my collection even though I did end up spending a little more than I had planned. I would have loved to have seen some more coins that matched my price range and taste but all an all it was a wonderful hunt. I was also able to add a beautiful 1881-O MS-64 to my set so it is shaping up nicely.

Items From The Vault #3

Coins-United States | FortWorthCollector

Today’s Item from the vault is a 1904 MS-63 Double Eagle. It is one of the most prized pieces in my collection. It was a birthday gift that I gave myself a few years ago and to this day is still one of my biggest gold pieces. I hope to add a Saint Gaudens Double Eagle to my collection sometime in the future.

Items From The Vault #2

Coins-United States | FortWorthCollector

This weeks item is an 1883 no cents Liberty head nickel in an NGC holder. It is graded MS-64 and is a very beautiful original mint luster coin. This coin also goes by that famous racketeer nickel name. If you have not heard the story about the racketeer nickel yet go and do a quick search on line it is definitely a good little read.

Texas Numismatic Association Additions to My Morgan Collection

Coins-United States | FortWorthCollector

I was able to add these two nice examples of Morgan dollars to my collection recently at the Texas Numismatic Associations coin show in Arlington, Texas. I usually don’t look specificly for Proof like coins just because it is challenging enough to find nice coins for the regular grade let alone proof like but this one just fell in my lap. I couldn’t pass it up for the price and I think it adds nicely to the set.

Ship of Gold (SS Central America Shipwreck Treasure Exhibit)

Coins-United States | FortWorthCollector

Today I went to the NRA national convention for the last chance to see the current discoveries from the SS Central America shipwreck before they are broken up and sold. I was able to meet and shake hands with bob Evans the chief scientist on the original voyage that discovered the shipwreck and is  now conserving the finds. I was also able to buy a pinch of gold which was the equivalent of 50¢ in the gold rush days and would have bought you a drink at a saloon. It was a great exhibit and I am glad I was able to catch it before it was broken up.

New additions to my Morgan Dollar Set

Coins-United States | FortWorthCollector

The ANA World’s Fair of Money in Denver was very kind this last year to my Morgan Dollar collection. I was able to add 5 new coins to the set. As most of you know my main goal was to pick up an 1893-S as it is one of the rarest coins of the set in any grade. I am very pleased  with the one I was able to obtain that was in my price range. I was also able to acquire a nice 1899 Mirco O which I have had a hard time finding in my local area in nice grades. The 1901-O, 1904 & 1921-S I was able to get in mint state grade that fit my budget. I hope everyone enjoys the photos and coins. Also I would like to mention that for Christmas I received a new DSLR camera so I hope that I will be able to share even better looking photos in the future.
