DIA de MUERTOS INSPIRED

Coins-World | Longstrider

Well the celebration Dia de Muertos, “Day of the Dead” has ended and I just watched a documentary on the last Emperor of Mexico. I think that means I should show off my latest Mexicans silver coin. The newest piece in my collection of Latin American silver coins is a 1904 Un Peso.

1932 "M" UN PESO CAP AND RAYS SILVER

Coins-World | Longstrider

I’m going to take a break from my Civil War collection and show you a coin from one of my other interests, old Mexican Silver coins. This blog also kind of ties in with Mike’s blog of May 15th. On improperly cleaned coins. Below I have an example of a 1932 silver Un Peso. It has a “M’ mintmark meaning it was made at the Mexico City mint. This coin falls into what is called the Cap and Rays variety. This variety is one of my favorites. As you can see the coin was graded by PCGS as Genuine with Surface Damage. The damage is on the obverse with a gouge above the snakes head and through the word Unidos. This caused the coin to sell below melt. Personally, I don’t see much difference between this and a Morgan with heavy coin contact marks on it. Just me. The coin has plenty of original mint luster on it. Someone took good care of it except for that gouge. It’s a personal choice of whether you can live with a “damaged” coin or not. Now to the coin design. The obverse has the Mexican national coat of arms above a spray of oak and laurel with the legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS near the top. Translated United States of Mexico. Divided by the eagles head is the silver purity, 0.7 and 20. The reverse is an open oak and laurel wreath below with the date 1932 above, then UN PESO then the mintmark “M”. Above all that is the Cap with LIBERTAD written on it and all the rays. Across the edge is the lettering INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD meaning Independence and Liberty. The coin is a nice 34 mm and weighs 16.6 grams. This one peso coin is known as a type 3. There are two varieties in this date. The open or closed 9. This one being a open 9. It has a KM number of 455. I hope you enjoy this piece of Mexican history. Please feel free to comment. Thanks for your time!

JOSE' MARI'A MORELOS y PAVO'N

Coins-World | Longstrider

The coin I am putting up today is a silver Un Peso minted in Mexico City in 1948. At first I found this coin to be kind of dull and boring. After research I have changed my mind. It has a rich history and story behind it. Much like all Mexico does. The obverse features the National Arms Eagle facing left. It is inscribed with "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". The reverse is the head of Jose Morelos facing left. It is lettered ".UN PESO 1948 Mo. 14 Gr 0.500. MORELOS.." It has a reeded edge, was minted in Mexico City 1947-1949. It's denomination is 1 Peso of .500 Silver. It weighs 14 g and is 32 mm in diameter and is 2 mm thick. Its KM number is 456. Once I researched this coin I was amazed at the history of the man it depicts and the history of his time in Mexico.

PANAMA AND MEXICO SILVER COINS

Coins-World | Longstrider

I recently was lucky enough to add to my Mexican/Central American coin collection. From my regular coin dealer I obtained this nice Silver Balboa issued by Panama. This one is dated 1934. It is .900 silver, weighs 26.73 grams and has a diameter of 38.1 mm and a reeded edge. I had stuck to Mexican silver coins but have now also started collecting Latin American coins. I feel they add something nice to my collections and stick to the style and flavor of Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo plus One

Coins-World | Longstrider

This is part of a collection of Mexican coins I have that should have been up yesterday in honor of Cinco de Mayo. I first saw these at the coin shop I frequent and purchased one as I love toned coins. When I got it home and started to study it in greater detail I noticed it is a 1892 eight reales. That means it's a "Piece of Eight". The coin of every old time treasure movie. I fell in love the designs on these historic coins and decided to get more. They aren't to expensive so I try to get one every other visit or so to the coin store. There are some very nicely toned ones which I have a hard time resisting! It might pay off to check out some foreign coins when you get a chance even if you don't collect them. You might see something you like!
