Why Do Adults Need Points? Please Comment Its Important!
Hi everyone I will keep this short. I will ask the question in the title. Why do we as adult collectors need points? The answer is I see no reason. The kids are the ones who need points. They need them for monthly auctions and the big one in September. We are all equal. Were collectors. We read about coins we own or don't own and write about them.
....So the ANA assigned these they must have a reason but I dont think anyone knows what that is I'm sure it was a good one. But times have changed.. The no points goes for My Collections also. Its plural which according to the dictionary meany more than one. That's why the site is set up for many coins I made that mistake till someone pointed it out to me. Also no points. Were a community of people who have one thing in common. Coins . The history and the background about that coin or token or sets that made it come to be made.
Were here to show our knowledge of these coins. We don't need points Its not a contest as to who has the most. Personally I dont care. If I'm first or last as long as I'm a collector respected by my peers. That's all I look for is respect. What more do we need to encourage us to write. As collectors we should be willing to freely give all our knowledge about a coin or a set of coins. There are books and books. There is no shortage of information out there that you can't write a respected blog. So why points? I don't know.?
....Its not a race but I believe points have turned it into that. We should be limited also so all can write a blog. Two a week from everyone would fill this site. Even one. There is no need for more than that. And people who look at our site will say that's a pretty good site the ANA has. We want respect. The N.G.C. Journal site . I was there for a while . I thought they had an anonynus place were you could voice your an opinion and not feel reprisal for it. Keeps everyone happy. This way the ANA would not have to monitor the site but get suggestions on how go improve it. Or if there having a problem with another writer. That happens. Were human. So what do you think ? Its a simple.yes or no! Give it a thouught Lets make this the best and most respected site there is. Remember we have some excellent bloggers. Lets step us as one to make it the best. To make it so people want to come to the ANA!! Mike
When I call someone a friend I mean it. Because it shows respect!!

By the way one person took his comments down. He was for points. The thing. he said about me only proves it.

I also agree with Mike on this issue. We don't need no stinking points. I'd be willing to give mine to a YN if it helps them. Point don't prove anything to me .... we're all fellow adult collectors here, and the YNs will be the adults before long. We don't use the points for anything anyway.

I thank you for making a comment. Voicing your opinion. I wish everyone did! That's why were here. Weather you agree or disagree it doesn't matter. The thing is for participating in the blog any blog and learning. By the way you can still comment! Im just thanking those who did at this point. No pun intended

To be clear, points do have anything to do with earning YN dollars... ...in order to earn YN dollars we have to let the ANA know what activities (i.e. a blog) we completed so that they can award us the YN dollars--points have nothing to do with it. So I vote--get rid of points for everybody! lol.

Because points are there, I occasionally look at my relative standing out of curiosity. However, if they were gone, I wouldn't miss them. If the ANA were to take a poll, I'd say, "Get rid of them for adults."

I used to like the points... I've been a member since 2014 and have worked my way up the ladder. It took me 8 years to get where I am today. It just seems like the overall feel of the ANA blog site has changed... It used to be everyone wrote blogs and commented. It was causal and fun. Now, for some reason, its become competitive and kinda stressful. Some members are averaging 2,500+ points a month or more... That's crazy! So, yes, I say we adults don't need points...

Kepi I believe the kids should keep the points the way they are don't change the kids!!

No points for collections either. Points are to be earned for contributions to the blog area and to show a true numismatic collection. Earn the points for quality, would be the way the site was originally intended.

When I made a comment I was referring to adults. The YN's should remain with a point system.

I don’t see the purpose of the points. I’d rather the points or levels reflect how long someone has been active. Like you said Mike, there’s no point contest here. If a YN is registered as a YN, let them earn their points for contributing blogs, or collections, or commenting on other’s posts. But, for adult members who are just sharing information, it’s a useless counter.

Mike said at my beginning here that points don't mean anything and I've always been intrinsically motivated so I don't care one way or the other. They can stay or they can go. It doesn't impact my activity here

From my perspective, there will always be "good" and "bad" blogs written by our membership. Two words which I only use to convey how many view them, while myself I find them either interesting and informative or I do not. So they simply become neither and I move on. To be clear I read every single blog, including the one liners and those that appear more of the forum variety of posts than a blog topic. All of this, in my mind, only reinforces that no member is greater or better in any way than another based upon a blog post or by any other means. We are all equal and passionate about numismatics. Yet, talking of points, it's blatantly obvious that others think contrary to the reality based largely on the content of each post. To avoid going down that rabbit hole once more by drawing the ANA staff into this, I'll stop short there, only to agree 100% that a point system means absolutely nothing. If it were to be gone tomorrow, so also would quite a few postings. As for myself, I'll keep on posting as long as the page exists, points be damned.

Thanks my friend. But this is about points. Its come up before you were here. The ANA gave us an answer but those of who were here don't remember it. Points only !

I would vote no points, I agree with others that some type of badge for length of activity would be a perfect replacement for seeing who is a respected member, as the point system has become more of an ego thing than useful: nobody gains YN$'s from it

Points only for a YN who is trying to earn ANA dollars or participating as aYN. Points for blogs. I think doing the actual blog awards the YN the YN dollars. I think YN's should only be awarded points for blogs and of course the YN auction dollars that go along with the blogs. Thanks for clarifying how the auction dollars are actually earned. Points being discontinued for everyone else seems reasonable.

I like Mokie's idea. A years served ribbon. Been there. Done that. Like the campaign ribbons in the military.

Did not know what the points were for, so seemed much like Whose Line is it Anyway where the points do not matter. So I agree with the other on no points or better yet like brownie points that go away at the end of the day. PS When I hit submit guess what another 10 points, it okay points do not matter.

I have to say this. Sun has been an active member of the ANA for over Fifty years. I have always respected his opinion!

I am with Mike on this issue, the points are completely useless and should be replaced with something that shows your longevity like a 1-year or 5-year or...... etc. just to show you've been around. Let's do away with points for anyone except YNs.

I like this idea too... 1,5,10+years participating in the ANA, contributing, blogging etc... A pin, plaque or special coin... Something on this order might be a nice change. ; )

I vote no points for adults. It has gotten stupid. With the collection doubling! Come on. Grow up.
