90s Sports commemoratives

Coins-World | Anakin104

Some collectors decide to collect commemorative sports coins instead of other currency and coins. In this article, I will talk about Olympic silver and gold coins and baseball related gold and silver coins and commemoratives.

                                                                                          Olympic  Commemoratives

In 1983 and 1984, three coins were issued to commemorate the XXIII Olympics.  The silver dollar in 1983 was designed by the  chief engraver at the time, who was Elizabeth Jones.  The obverse depicts a Greek athlete preparing to throw the discus, which is an adaption of the  works of ancient sculptor, Myron. Since it was held in Los Angeles,  Los Angeles is  on the coin, along with the five Olympic  rings, and on the reverse is an eagle. The  84 silver coin is designed by American sculptor Robert Graham, which shows the entrance to the  Los Angeles  coliseum.  The first gold coin issued in 50 years was the 1984 Olympic $10 coin. It depicts two runners with the Olympic torch and on the reverse shows an adaption of the eagle from the Great Seal. The 1988 Olympic coin commemorates the Seoul Olympiad,  and the obverse is designed by Patricia  L. Verani, and the reverse is designed by Sheri J. Winter. The 1988 gold coin shows Nike, and the Olympic flame.

                                                                                 Baseball related coins and commemoratives

In 1992, on the Olympic  silver dollar, shows a pitchers windup to get ready to pitch.  Marcel Jovine combines the Olympic  rings with olive branches and stars and stripes from  the  USA.  In 1995, on the centennial  Olympic  games coin , depicts an umpire, or ump, with the catcher and batter in a baseball game. In 1997,  the Mint honored Jackie Robinson by putting him on a silver dollar and  a gold coin, although he had passed away in 1972. It shows him sliding into home plate to score and celebrates when he won the Rookie of the Year award in 1947, and when he was inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. He is also honored with a $5 gold coin, which shows a baseball with the words "Legacy of Courage ", and the years he was born and when he died, which are the years 1919 to 1972. In the 2000s,  the Mint issued some silver dollars and gold coins showing no players, but gloves and baseballs.  On the coin is words on most or all American coins, E Pluribus Unum, which  happens to be a Latin phrase meaning One from Many,  which was proposed for the Great Seal by Founding Father's Thomas Jefferson,  inventor Benjamin Franklin  and John Adam's. It also says  the United States of America. The last commemorative  baseball coins I will mention are the silver dollars with every teams logo , which is from the Highland Mint.

Jackie Robinson received a commen for what he did. He took the abuse of his own players for years . And broke the color barrier of baseball. . Don't wait for the mint to come out with them. Look on ebay you will find them there.

What? A blog to say you are going to do a blog but this isn't it? I think I am way to old if this is OK.

Yes you can buy many different coins from some mints. But you won't see these made by the U.S.mint. You can buy all sorts of different coins. But the mint will not make a series of commens on baseball. We have a saying we buy what we like.

I just mentioned that in my own blog. You can buy them for less than the issue price. A beautiful, out of the box design.
