A Book Review of Collecting & Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars by Jeff Ambio

Young Numismatists Exchange | The Silver Half Dollar

Collecting & Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars by Jeff Ambio is a great book about the Walking Liberty Half Dollar Series. The book begins with a short introduction to different collecting strategies one may go about, such as type sets, registry sets, mint mark and date sets, and the difficult set of proofs. The book then dives into a brief history of the Walking Liberty Half, such as the design process and distribution of these wonderful coins. The majority of the book consists of values by grade, in addition to estimated survival in each grade and significant examples of these coins, with their realized prices.

I personally liked how the book described the estimated survival of each date/mint mark combination of the coins, in addition to typical strike quality and important varieties.

The only part of this book that I did not like was how little information it contained on the history of these majestic half dollars.

Overall, I would give this book a 9/10. While the price information is slightly outdated, much of the other info such as typical strike quality and notable varieties are very useful things that the Redbook or Cherrypickers Guide do not address.

Always liked walkers, but just have a few bullion ones.

I think the Red Book Guide to Mercury Dimes, Standing Liberty Quarters, and Liberty Walking Half Dollars by Mr. Bowers will probably fill in all the historical inadequacies of the Collecting/Investing Guide. Those types of books tend to be investor oriented and do not tend to include much background.

Nice blog! I really like "Walkers" myself. Great design. I just picked up a 1939 Walker from my coin dealer that had been made into a button. Really cool! Thanks for your book review! ; )

That sounds like a must have book for Walker collectors. I have similar books on my peace Dollar VAMs. It's very true that "knowledge is power". Good job. Nice concise blog. I enjoyed it. Thanks.
