1957 Spain 5 Pesetas Coins

Coins-World | AC coin$

This two samples of Spanish 5 Pesetas bring a sense of a time rather uneasy for some spaniards still alive.Yet, history called for a Spain that faced civil war and a dictator who ruled from 1939 until his death in 1975, this man was called Francisco Franco. Franco is depicted on the coins obverse and the modernized Spanish Coat of Arms on the reverse. All issues dealing with royalty and the Borbón Monarchic dynasty were supressed for the time the "generalísimo" Franco was in control of the government. King Juan Carlos and his family auto-exiled themselves to Greece and then England and the Netherlands until the dictator'sdeath in November 1975.

1944 Brazil 50 Centavos Coin

Coins-World | AC coin$

Interesting coin issued in 1944, when Brazil was recovering from the shock left by the WWII campaings in the rest of the World.Getúlio Vargas, eminent politician and Brazilian ex-military leader, born in a well-to-do family is portrayed on the obverse of this coin. He was President of the Republic of the United States of Brazil from 1930 to 1945, at his first term, overthrown by a coup d'etat in 1945. Then returned to the seat in 1951 until his death in 1954. A man who sought leadership principles to unify his countrymen yet hisalliances were shadowed by a sympathy towards Germany while ascertaining the back ups of USA and other countries. The merchant marine and the new evolutions of treaties everywhere brought opportunities for his government and agenda. Brazil became more recognized as a potential market during both of his two terms. An attractive South American destination, Brazil issued this 50 centavos of a Cruzeiro amidst changing times. Enjoy this international sample of my collection.

1944 Philippines 10 "centavos" Coin

Coins-World | AC coin$

The Philippines islands became a United States territorial possession after the Hispanic American War in 1898. The islands went thru several transitions in the political and economic sectors way further into the 1980's as part of its own adjustments to establish both cultural and identityissues. After suffering a Japanese invasion in WWII, the US Armed Forces regained control of the islands in 1944 and steadily moved the economy and administration of the Philippines people to a better advantage point. Supervision and issuance of currency befell over US Government authorities present in Manila. This silver made coin is a nice example of such activity mentioned above. Beautifully designed, the coin represents hope and progress within that specific year of 1944.

1922 Belgium 25 Centimes Coin

Coins-World | AC coin$

Albert I of Belgium was crowned King in 1909 and he was sovereign until his accidental death in 1934. A man considered a National hero after he led his army in World War I at campaings on Belgian soil. He was also a political reformer and founder of charities and social welfare institutions, facts that placed the monarchy in a more people oriented trend within the boundaries of his nation. This interesting coin designed with the King's monogram on one of its sides and the simple olive sprig of the other has been considered intriguig and a well sought item because of its center hole, a feature we see in oriental coinage more often. Yet, it has been found this hole centered coin issuance is not necessarily tied to oriental nations. The beautiful coin circulated from 1910 until 1929. It was minted with inscriptions in Dutch and French languages. Mine here is the French version. Thanks for your visit and comments.

1910 Puerto Rico Farmer's Workhand Token

Tokens | AC coin$

When the United States of America administration took over the island of Puerto Rico, around September 1898, it faced an unstable economy and precarious infrastructure, both inland and at the larger cities. Within the first 22 to 32 years of American presence in the once held Spanish stronghold, this type of token or menchant's coin circulated in various shapes, sizes and even non-round forms. Its dimensions fluctuated from 19mm to 25mm at most, and usually made of tin or rarely in aluminum, not many were struck in copper. Even though the one shown here is from 1910, this specific type was circulating from as early as 1900, mostly struck in the back of a warehouse at a larger city in the island with subsidiaries for each merchant or farm dealer.Inland, specifically within the mountain towns, agriculture and the selling of necessary goods was practically the two aspects moving people in and out of farm sustained communities. Those who stayed, faced dependency on major "Hacienda" owners as laborers and non-payed workhands. Being on a non-pay status meant to depend on running food certified bills or food notes and, within more organized farms, tokens with various denominations pegged to larger commercial providers or wholesale dealers (who at most instances were well-to-do Spaniards who befriended American investors and government officials.)This is a 1910 token worth 10 cents, pegged to F. GÓMEZ a merchandiser tied to the "Hacienda Palma Escrita" in themunicipality of Las Marías, Puerto Rico. The town is located in the Western Central Mountain range. This area is known to produce Valenciana type oranges, coffee and other citric fruits. With this token, a laborers' wife was able to acquire flour, sugar, dry goods and in rare cases meat. Prizes were that low, poverty was extremelly high. This products were also bought at the merchandiser's store facility usually or conveniently located within the entrance of the Hacienda or plantation. It was a round business. This is historically relevant as a monetary item representation, a token with buying power from the very beginning of the twentieth century. It is a vintage non-financial item from a territory of the USA as it worked towards a better future.
