Cheerypicker’s Guide (Sixth Edition, Volume 1): A Review

Library | thatcoinguy

I recently checked this book out from the library, and couldn't wait to read and review it. If you are considering buying this book, just know it is $120.

So! The Cherrypicker's Guide. The ultimate money maker in numismatics. I finally got this book from the library (it is available from the ANA library, you only have to pay shipping). Despite what I originally thought, the Cherrypicker's Guide is NOT for your average casual roll searcher. There are limited varieties for coin commonly found in pocket change in this book. However, if you are looking for varieties that lie under the radar in your collection, this is the book for you.

The Cherrypicker's Guide Volume One covers half cents, cents, two cent pieces, trimes, three cent nickels (there IS a difference), and nickels. The listings include real pictures of the actual variety coin, the Fivaz-Stanton Listing (and the CONECA listing if applicable), a comparative pricing chart of the variety vs the regular coin in various grades, and the rarity and popularity values. The listings also include what Mr. Fivaz likes to refer as PUPs, or pick up points. It tells you where to look on the coin for the variety, and what to look for. It also includes diagnostics of real coins for more valuable and known varieties, such as the 1955 Doubled Die Obverse, or the 1922 No D.

Keep collecting (and reading),

I have heard of this book because it has been mentioned in several of the books I’ve already seen. That price is a little steep! Thanks for sharing!

The new edition comes out this year, which might be less than $100 retail, I don;t know. I’ll try and get in contact with Bill Fivaz to see what the issue price is going to be.

The price is so much because they don’t print the book anymore. Even still it is quite a lot.

Written by two and forwarded by two of the greatest writers and researchers in numismatics. A work which has been on my list for far too long, time to buy one. Thanks for the blog reminder.

Consider yourself lucky that your Library has a copy-that way you don't have to buy it. I think it is actually possible to request that your library add certain books that they don't already have, hmm.... Nice blog!
