Silver Against all Odds | Coin Update #48

| CoinHunter

Hello all!

I finally found some time to write up this blog-so please enjoy!

So, sometime a week or two ago I went to my bank to cash a check and asked if I could possibly get a box of coins—in fact I said something like “could I get a box of cents, nickels, or dimes?” Now, before I move on with the story, I am going to amaze you with a stunning fact—I have never hunted a box of dimes before. I guess it is just because of how many times I’ve heard that dime boxes rarely have silver. Now, how did the teller reply? Well it is actually pretty cool—he replied: “would one of each do?” I practically yelled (well, not really) “Yes!” So, in the end, I came back with my first ever box of dimes, a box of nickels (I’ve been doing really well with nickels recently-recall my V-nickel find in my last box), and a box of cents (which I was hoping would be brand new 2022s so I could at it to my OBW box collection). Since I hunted the nickels first, I’ll share the nickels finds first. Well, as I was going through the three boxes looking for enders—I was stunned to find something on one of the last nickel rolls—a buffalo ender! Once I opened the roll I found that it was a 1936 in pretty decent shape (other than the “ring of death”). If you recall, my last nickel box actually had a war nickel ender—so this is pretty cool. Anyways, I opened one of the nickel rolls to find three dark edges (which are good candidates for silver) after pulling out the two less likely ones and finding them to be nothing, I pulled out the last one and found a 1942-P silver nickel! Well, I guess I finally found my first silver coin of the year! Also in the nickel rolls I found a golden colored, odd shaped coin and pulled it out to find an Irish 10 Euro cent. Also in the box I found two minor clashes and two nice strike throughs (a 2020-P and a 2021-P).

Well, now we move on to the dime box. Ok, so, when I was going through the three boxes looking for enders and started checking the dime box I realized that all but three of the rolls had brand new 2021-P enders. After going through a few rolls, I figured out that although the box was mainly brand new, there were a couple of circulated coins per roll with the exception of 4 rolls that were mainly circulated. The first three of these normal rolls were easy to find as they had well circulated coins on their ends—so I went through them first. Little did I know, there was a forth “normal” roll that I wouldn’t end up searching till just about the end of the box. Once I got too this roll, I opened it to find a bunch of circulated dimes (something I hadn’t seen in a over 40 rolls) and I pulled out an edge that looked remotely silver (doubting it could possibly be one) and was shocked to see that it was a 1962-D!

Well, this blog is long enough—so I’ll save the finds of the cent box along with a couple of purchases for my next blog (which should be out this week hopefully).

How did I miss this? You were very lucky.! Great find. On eBay they do this to bait you. When you get the roll its usually the only one in it.

You have great finds. I wonder when somebody made that roll with the buffalo ender, did they notice it? I once found a Poland coin in a Cent roll, so that might just happen sometimes.
