New Design For American Silver Eagles!
| Harrison
Last night The U.S. Mint released new designs for the 35th anniversary of the American silver eagle. My thoughts about this design are mixed , I don't really like it because the feathers on the eagle seem like to much detail to fit on a small coin. I do like the flying eagle because I think the numismatic community as a whole will like this , the last reason I think this is a good design is that on the right wing of the eagle it goes out of frame on the coin which I really like because I don't know any other coin like that. I would like to hear your opinions on this coin in the comments. Anyways hope you liked my blog!

Only time and a close up of the coin will tell!!!

I'm in the same boat as Mokie also ! I don't currently own any gold (coins or jewelry) so that's where I draw the line! I did get my notification from the mint and have seen the designs. I may purchase one so that I have the "last/first" editions of the ASE, but that would be the only reason. Hopefully the new design will do the coin "justice" ! One can only hope! Also like Bama, I'm a HUGE Temptations fan!

Well, it's certainly going to an interesting design change. I guess I'll just have to see the coin in person to see how I feel about it.

I like it, just not as much as the older design, sigh, like Mike I was hoping they would think outside the box, but it's better than most of the new designs I've seen. Time will tell. Thanks for the post.

Perhaps it's me. I find the new changes unappealing. Not in the subject matter or orientation, rather the more modern look paired with the classic obverse. The artists could have done much better using the same format, only applied differently.

OK. Thanks Bama. The gold, not a fan. What's with the bumps on it's beak? The silver, I just don't know. I'm with Mokie, I'll have to wait and see how it looks on a coin. I hope it's awesome.

@ longstider .... I think the bumps are authentic. I've seen them on other raptors...

I'm with ya there LS. I think I like it, but until I hold it, I have no clue.

It will all be in the execution, I like the concept, I will withhold judgement on the ASE reverse until I see it in production. I think it will look great in Proof if they give it a detailed engraving of the feathers. As for the gold with the eagle's head only, I am not a fan. But then again, I am to poor for gold so they will never grace my collection anyway.

It looks like.a.Wedge Tail Eagle. That's why.I'm not a fan. .Thanks longstrider for getting me to remember why I didn't collect that set. No power no strength it looks.weak. An eagle looks noble and a sign of our country . It's a very powerful bird. Not this one..

I love the Australian Wedge-tailed series. Have every design in PCGS MS/PF70, but lacking several high-reliefs and the standard proofs. Very tough to assemble with such lows number in 70. Mercanti designed both coins by the way.

I'm sorry I do not like it. No imagination. Looks simple. Doesn't look as dynamic as I thought it would be. But that's the mint. Sure everyone will buy one. How many will buy 34 years of it? Im kinda glad I'm old were I will never finish the set. It does not catch my eye. I would pass it over. We buy what we like. I don't like it. I was looking forward to it. The liberty design was not liked because the eagles legs went of the coin. Same here only it's the wings.. That's my opiion. Dynamic it's not. When will they think out side of the box.?

This will execute very well on the ASE, it's a big coin. Are they using the same design on the gold eagles? I thought I saw on coin week the gold reverse was different from the silver, but it might be my imagination running away with me ( a little temptations reference there, ha ha!)

Interesting... I was just thinking last night how they should make a new design... I am happy to hear they are. I love this design, and very much hope they will be released. Cheers, NM

I'm sorry but the eagle is not the same on the silver and gold. Check the mint website. I believe Australia has some eagles, Wedge Tailed, that are outside the coins.

Alright well I will fix that thank you

It will be extremely lifelike, and odd to see a new design that actually looks like the animal. The eagle has gone through a long journey from the scrawny eagle to this.
