Today I found a 2009D Jefferson Nickel

Coins | user_9894

After a week of looking at over 1000 nickels, I found 1 and only one, 2009 Jefferson nickel and that was from the Denver mint. Even though more than 86 million were put into circulation. It is hard to believe that, that many are so hard to find after only 8 years. The two photos of the complete coin were taken with my D600 camera with tube extensions on it, while the other photos were taken with my digital industrial inspection microscope. I could have gotten in even closer, but I was in pushing it today. Still learning how to adjust for focus, lighting, etc. I will publish my camera setup as soon as I can.

Way to go with the photos. It takes time and effort but it adds so much to each blog. Not sure why 2009 coins are so hard to find. Maybe someone else reading the blog knows?

A lot of fun also, and I am getting better at it. I have a box of cents waiting for when I have some spare time. Photos of my camera setup coming soon.

I like looking at pennies and nickels too. I do not find many 2009 pennies or nickels.

So, where does one put all those 2009 pennies and nickels?

I read an article on why the 2009 nickels, and cents, ate not showing up in change. It's a puzzle.

It is interesting that people will hoard those nickels with a "low" mintage of more than 86 million, while the 1932 D & S quarter are plentiful with less than 1 million total minted.

The mintage for 2009 coins seems like a lot, but in reality it is not. Compare the mintage of 2009 coins for a few years before and after, you will see, 2009 coins are "low" mintage. Check history, and you will see lower mintage for coins in economical down turns.

I can see that it is 1 coin for 1 out of 5 people!

Excellent pictures. That's unbelievable that after looking thru all those nickels and the mintage being so high it was hard to find one. Then again we don't know what happens when they leave the mint. Keep up the good work with the pictures I appreciate them . Mike.
