Just In Case You're Upset About the 2020 ANA Convention

World's Fair of Money | VKurtB

Hi, fellow ANA'ers. I work for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and I am mourning the loss of the 2020 World's Fair of Money as much or more than anyone. I committed to be there for the entire show whenever and wherever it was going to be held.

How Do I Strike Thee? Let Me Count the Ways...

| VKurtB

My previously promised post about an auctionin York, Pennsylvania had to give way to an urgent work project that kept me busy allweekend on NFL Pro Bowl weekend. So, it was more entertaining at work than the Pro Bowl looked, from the clips I saw. Zzzzzz. Sorry, but the Superb Owl wasn't any better.

Should I Brag or Apologize?

Coins-United States | VKurtB

Okay, so the new series is upon us - the American Innovators dollar series. All NIFC - "not intended for circulation". Too bad. NIFC is a purgatory-like status.

Why Can't Anybody Run a Useful Coin Discussion Board?

Collecting Tips | VKurtB

I simply don't get it. Maybe I'm of the wrong generation, or something. But why can't anybody run a coin discussion board that's worth spending time on? CoinTalk is a complete train wreck with excessively heavy-handed moderation, and it's run by egomaniacs. Disagree with them too much on ANYTHING, and they'll make up a violation to ban you. Their rules are really only one. "The site managers are above error." I know; been there, done that. Plus, the zeitgeist on CoinTalk.com has always beenOPENLY HOSTILE TO THE ANA! And the site MANAGERS AND OWNERSHIPARE THE RINGLEADERSof that zeitgeist. The NGC discussion board is moribund, and the PCGS is merely a rah-rah site for them, and little else. And is it just me, or does EVERYTHING that touches PCGS reek of a "superiority complex"?

Not Everyone is Honest in Numismatics

| VKurtB

I don't want to scare any of our new collectors, especially YN's, but not everybody "has your back" in numismatics.

Philadelphia Was Off Da Hook, Ya'ow?

World's Fair of Money | VKurtB

I'm sorry, I have to say this - gripe all you want about the ignorant labor union rules at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and you wouldn't be wrong. But I am quite sorry but Denver, Colorado; Anaheim, California; and even Rosemont, Illinois cannot hold a candle to Philly when it comes to dragging out a crowd for an ANA World's Fair of Money. Even school-aged kids were in abundance. Philly area school districts don't open until September 4th (they'll still be in class on June 10), some even later as they discover the mold that grew in their buildings this summer from record rainfalls. Last year, a random rifle shot up an aisle at Denver would have endangered no one!

Anybody Remember Themed Philatelic Covers?

World's Fair of Money | VKurtB

Are you old enough to remember the craze of First Day Cover collecting in philately? There used to be a lot of people who were both coin collectors and stamp collectors. But in these more modern days, many people have decided to specialize in one or the other. I guess I'm just old enough to have a foot in both worlds. I like to create my own covers, with a particular theme. I especially like to collect covers with the theme of major coin shows.

Still Looking for Good Airfares for ANA Denver?

World's Fair of Money | VKurtB

It seems that affordable airfares from the East Coast to Denver in the week of the ANA show are few and far between. Usually, I like to take Southwest Airlines to most destinations, but that is not a low-priced option from the northeast this time.

The Langbord Story is Over!

Coins | VKurtB

On Thursday, April 13, 2017, the United States Supreme Court met in conference to consider petitions before the Court. Among those petitions considered was the Petition of the Langbord Family appealing the en banc Opinion and Order of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit granting title of the 10 1933 St.Gaudens Double Eagles to the United States government. The Petition for Certiorari has been denied.

2017 Winter FUN: A Coin Odyssey

Coins | VKurtB

Well, my son and I now have our "epic road trip" under our belts. We left the State Capitol in Harrisburg at the end of swearing-in (at?) day on Tuesday January 3, and took an aging Ford Taurus as our trusty steed to Fort Lauderdale. Since Tuesday had been a whirlwind of activity, we were already kind of running on low, so we decided to ditch our "let's drive straight through the night" plan (for now) and figured we'd go as far as one full tank of gas would take us - which turned out to be Wilson, NC. So we grabbed a few, not nearly enough, hours of shuteye at a nice little Sleep Inn (my choice of hotel bonus plans is "Choice" so ...) there. Breakfast bar was nice enough, so on we trudged. My son had never had the "South of the Border" highway billboard experience, so he got it in full daylight southbound. We had no idea what delays would affect our southward progress, so we didn't know whether we'd make Fort Lauderdale Wednesday night or have to bail and sleep somewhere north of there and go straight to the convention center. As it turned out, we arrived at our Fort Lauderdale "home away from home" by 10PM Wednesday night, after making the obligatory stop at the Florida line for free OJ and brochures, and stopping to have a proper BBQ dinner at a old-school 1960's kitsch era roadside BBQ joint on U.S.1 south of Titusville in the space coast region. It was easy to imagine Alan Shepard, John Glenn, and Gus Grissom at the next table discussing their ideas for redesigning the Mercury capsule. My son likes to eat at non-chain sites that he finds online, and this one was a pure gem. This is Louis's BBQ Shack, 2191 N. US Hwy 1, Mims, FL 32754.
