DAVID ALEXANDER NAMED ANA’S 2013 NUMISMATIST OF THE YEAR

David Alexander, a collector, scholar, and numismatic author with more than 38 years of experience, is the American Numismatic Association’s 2013 Numismatist of the Year. He was presented with the award Aug. 16 during the Awards Banquet at the ANA World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Ill.

 

David AlexanderAlexander has authored numerous publications aiding and contributing to the hobby. He is most noted for his book,American Art Medals, 1909-1995: Circle of Friends of the Medallion and Society of Medalists. He has written cover stories forThe Numismatist, including: “Chinese Gold Ingot of Oregon and Peter Britt” (1987), “Die Varieties of the Medals of Wartime Philippine President Jose P. Laurell” (1988), and “Selling America’s Rarest Coin: The 1933 Double Eagle” (2002). He currently writes a weekly column forCoin Worldtitled “The Research Desk.”

 

Alexander is a life member of the American Numismatic Society, the Numismatic Literary Guild, Miami Coin Club, and Florida United Numismatics. He was a founding member of the American Medallic Sculpture Association in 1983 and established the Medal Collectors of America in 1998. He worked for Stack’s Bowers Galleries from 1990-2012 and Heritage Auctions from March 2012 to May 2013. He is currently the East Coast representative for Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., based in Chicago.

 

Throughout his literary career, Alexander has received numerous awards including the Clemy, the highest honor of the Numismatic Literary Guild. He was named an ANS Fellow in 2008. For his book on American art medals, Alexander received the Professional Numismatist Guild’s Robert Friedberg Literary Award in 2011. In 2010, he received the Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for Excellence in Numismatic Writing, an award presented jointly by the ANA, ANS and NLG.

 

Alexander has also received the ANA’s Presidential Award (1998), the Glenn Smedley Memorial Award (1999), and the Medal of Merit (2000).
