Eric Li Cheung honored as ANA’s 2001 outstanding YN

At the Abe Kosoff Young Numismatists (YN) Awards Breakfast, sponsored by the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) at the American Numismatic Association (ANA) 110th Anniversary 
Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, Eric Li Cheung of New York, New York, was named the 2001 recipient of the ANA Award for Outstanding Young Numismatist.

Established in 1968, the award annually recognizes the numismatic achievements of top young collectors, selected on the basis of club and, community involvement; numismatic exhibits, talks and articles; and personal achievements. The winner receives a life membership in the ANA and a gold coin donated by former YN of the year Mark Hotz.

Cheung is a member of many numismatic clubs, including, the ANA, American Numismatic Society (ANS), Clements Coin Club (Sugar Land, Texas), Colonial Collectors Club, Early 
American Coppers (EAC), Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG) and Young Numismatists of America (YNA). He participates in the Numismatic Bibliomania Society, society’s on-line journal, The E-Sylum, as well as Coinmasters ( also on-line).

In the last four years, Cheung has spoken and volunteered at YN shows in New England and Northeastern regions. He is a certified ANA Class I National Exhibit Judge an exhibit judge at regional conventions and YN shows; a panelist for the 1996 Numismatic Literary Guild Symposium at the 1996 Denver ANA Convention; a contributor to A Handbook of United States Coins (“Blue Book”), as well as How to Make Money in Coins Right Now Travers. He served a week-long practicum at Stack’s Rare Coin Galleries in January 1996 and helped attribute/catalog early coins featured in Stack’s March 1996 sale.

Cheung has exhibited at ANA Anniversary Conventions in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001. At three of those shows, he won the Charles H. Wolfe Sr. Award for YN Best-in-Show Exhibit. He exhibited during National Coin Week from 1995 through 2000. Cheung also exhibits at local coin shows, club meetings and schools.

Cheung frequently makes presentations at school, coin shows, club meetings and numismatic conventions, and has written a number of articles, several of which have been published. His work was recognized by the Numismatic Literary Guild in 1996; the ANA in 1998, 1999 and 2000; and the Royal Numismatic Society in 2001.Cheung excels in other areas as well and has been honored with many academic awards. 

He has played both the violin and piano since he was six years old, and is a piano major at the Julliard School of Music. Cheung performs monthly at Julliard and has been extremely successful in his musical pursuits.

Cheung is active in his community and volunteers with the Kiwanis Educating Youth (KEY) Club and the New York City Outreach (NYCO), and at the Battery Park City public tennis courts as an instructor.Cheung will attend Stanford University in the fall. After reviewing his impressive resume, it is easy to see why one of the best schools in the country is happy to accept him. The ANA is honored to present Eric Li Cheung with the Young Numismatist of the Year Award.
