Erin L. Davis honored as ANA’s 2000 Outstanding YN
At the Abe Kosoff Young Numismatists (YN) Awards Breakfast, sponsored by the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), held during the American Numismatic Association (ANA) 109th Anniversary Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Erin L. Davis of Georgetown, Texas, was named the 2000 recipient of the ANA Award for Outstanding Young Numismatist. She also was recognized at the ANA Summer Seminar in July.
Established in 1968, the award annually recognizes the numismatic achievements of top young collectors selected on the basis of club and community involvement; numismatic exhibits, talks and articles; and personal achievements. The winner receives a life membership in the ANA and gold coin donated by Mark Holtz. Davis served as the ANA’s Summer Intern in 1999, working for the Association’s Money Museum, accessioning, cataloging and researching a donation of Athenian Imperial coinage; the ANA Education Department, compiling the 1999 Association’s YN auction catalog; and the ANA Library, serving as a research assistant.
Also as an ANA 1999 Summer Intern, Davis graduated from the Association’s School of Numismatics, completing correspondence courses on “Introduction to Numismatics,” “Grading Coins Today,” “Detecting Counterfeit and Altered U.S. Coins,” “The Modern Minting Process and Errors and Varieties,” and “Grading Mint State Coins.” Davis attended the ANA Summer Seminar from 1994-99 on scholarship and has worked as a research assistant to Dr. John H. Kroll, professor of numismatics at the University of Texas at Austin, on a die study of Athenian Imperial coinage.
An exhibitor for a number of years, Davis received a first-place award at the 1997 Texas Numismatic Association convention and a Junior best-in-show award at the 1996 Michigan Numismatic Association fall convention for her display of “The Sol Reverses of Constantine the Great.”
Davis is the author of “Athenian Coinage: The Harlan J. Berk Donation,” which has been accepted for publication in the ANA’s monthly journal, The Numismatist. As a junior year at Hillsdale College, she spent this past year in Athens, Greece, studying classical languages, literature, history and archaeology. This summer she worked on the Agora excavation for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.
