Heritage to auction finest at ANA show in Charlotte

Heritage Numismatic Auctions of Dallas, Texas, is set to offer some of the finest coin rarities at its sale at the American Numismatic Association (ANA) National Money ShowSM in Charlotte, North Carolina, March 21-23.

“Heritage Numismatic Auctions, our official auctioneer, has a long tradition of holding successful auctions for us, and we expect this upcoming sale will be successful as well,” says ANA Executive Director Christopher Cipoletti.

Among the many lots Heritage has lined up for the show in Charlotte is a unique pattern piece produced in 1965, when the United States Mint was preparing to switch from coins struck in silver to the current clad coinage. The Mint tested nine different alloys for 10-, 25-and 50-cent denominations. Heritage will auction a Martha Washington pattern half dollar struck on a quarter planchet. It is unknown how many pattern pieces were produced in each of the test alloys, however, until the discovery of this piece, only three such specimens were known to exist. They were embedded in Lucite® and given to the Smithsonian Institution.

The coin is graded Mint State (MS)-66 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), and Greg Rohan, President of Heritage, says, “To the best of our knowledge, this is the only known Martha Washington half dollar pattern available to collectors. The fact that this piece is an error further adds to its desirability.”

Among the other ANA auction highlights are:
  • • An 1858 “Large Letters” Flying Eagle cent graded Proof (PR)-67 “ultra cameo” by NGC.
  • • A 1920-D Mercury dime with “lustrous” toning and full bands, graded MS-67 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).
  • • An 1860 Seated Liberty quarter graded PR-67 “cameo” by NGC.
  • • An 1898 $2.50 gold piece graded PR-67 “deep cameo” by PCGS.
  • • An 1872 $3 gold piece graded PR-64 “cameo” by PCGS.
  • • A 1799 “Small Stars” Bust $10 gold coin graded MS-63 by NGC.
  • • An 1886 $10 gold graded PR-64 “cameo” by NGC.

Auction lot viewing opens at 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, in Hall C of the Charlotte Convention Center. Auction sessions will be held in Room 213-AB of the convention center at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 20 and 21, and 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 22.
