INFLUENCE & POWER OF IMAGES TOPIC OF SUNDMAN LECTURE SERIES
MEET PRESENTERS, DISCUSS LECTURES DURING SPECIAL GOURMET LUNCHEON
This year’s Maynard Sundman/Littleton Coin Company Lecture Series looks at the power and influence of images depicted on money. The lecture series will be presented Aug. 8 during the American Numismatic Association’s 2012 World’s Fair of MoneySM at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
The lectures will take place in Room 104B and are free and open to all attending the show.
Four speakers will deliver talks on this year’s topic, “The Influence & Power of Images.”
LECTURES:
10 a.m.: “The First Issue of the Supreme Junta of Zitácuaro and Theories on Early Mexican Symbolism.” Presenter Max A. Keech discusses how the symbolism of Mexico was introduced on coinage made during the country’s War for Independence in 1811. Often misunderstood, Keech explains the origins of symbols such as the Mexican national emblem of an eagle perched on a cactus.
11:15 a.m.: “The State Seals on Series 1875-1882 National Bank Notes.” Author and noted researcher Peter Huntoon discusses how the state seals depicted on National Bank Notes were used as advertising vehicles – promoting opportunity, abundance, industry, natural wonders and much more.
2 p.m.: “A Handful of Symbolism: Discover the Message behind Hands Depicted on Coins, Notes and More.” Presenter William Myers demonstrates how hands have been used to convey messages and ideas on money since ancient times.
3:15 p.m.: “Picture This – Nano-Imaging Provides Insight Into Modern Fakes.” Author Fred N. Holabird’s talk shows what can be learned by looking closer, literally. Recent work on state-of-the-art scanning electron microscopes has provided new insights into the sub-microscopic world of precious metals, providing a better understanding of the differences in man-made metallic objects, particularly coins and ingots.
Luncheon:
Enjoy lunch with this year’s lecturers at a catered, gourmet luncheon from 12:15-1:45 p.m. Aug. 8 in Room 303A, near the lecture area. Attendees may choose from steak, chicken or a vegetarian option. The luncheon is $15 per person and is underwritten by the Maynard Sundman Littleton Coin Co. Lecture Series Endowment and David Sundman.
