Last Saturday, October 4, 2014, the Las Vegas
Numismatic Society (LVNS) held a special meeting in honor of the Sesquicentennial
of Nevada Statehood. Over 100 members
and guests attended. Professor Michael
Green of UNLV, noted Nevada, Civil War, and Lincoln historian, spoke about the
events surrounding Nevada becoming a state on October 31, 1864. Members of the Nevada Civil War History Association,
dressed in period garb, brought many artifacts including a cannon. The LVNS’ Carson City Type Set was on display
along with the 2006 Nevada 50-State quarters.
Examples from Binion’s and Redfield’s hoards, and many other examples of
Nevada coins, were also on display. And
what would a birthday party be without a cake?
