MANLEY DONATES CLAIN-STEFANELLI ITEMS TO ANA LIBRARY

An array of items from the recent auction of the personal collections of former Smithsonian Institution National Numismatic Collection Curators Vladimir and Elvira Clain-Stefanelli  have been acquired by California real estate developer and long-time coin collector, Dwight N. Manley, and donated to the American Numismatic Association.

One collection provides insights into the 1950 controversy regarding the Franklin Hoard of U.S. Assay Office gold coins and ingots allegedly found in Arizona.  The donation included related reports by nationally recognized numismatists John J. Ford Jr., Walter Breen, Don Taxay and Eric P. Newman. It also includes correspondence between Ford, Breen, Valdimir Clain-Stefanelli and Mint Director Eva Adams.

Manley also donated a working draft of Elvira Clain-Stefanelli’s Beauty and Lore of Coins and her original typewritten manuscript of Numismatics: An Ancient Science

These items were purchased by Manley at the Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers auction on Jan.12, 2013.

Once the items have been cataloged, they will be available for study in the ANA’s Dwight N. Manley Numismatic Library, 818 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, Colo.
