NATIONAL MONEY SHOW A TREASURE TROVE OF ACTIVITY FOR COLLECTORS
The American Numismatic Association’s National Money Show TM will showcase some of the world’s most valuable and historic numismatic items, 500 of the hobby’s best dealers, a world-class auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries and a wide variety of educational programs and family activities from May 9-11 in New Orleans, La.
The show at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 9-10 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 11, with ticket sales ending 30 minutes before closing. Admission is free for ANA members and $6 for non-members. Children ages 12 and under are admitted free.
The ANA’s Museum Showcase (booth 445) will feature an assortment of rare and historically significant Louisiana items, including silver and bronze examples of the medal awarded to Zachary Taylor by the state of Louisiana following his victories in the Mexican-American War. Also on display will be items related to the great Mississippi Bubble scandal of the 1720s, which includes examples of John Law notes and satirical medals and tokens related to the financial disaster, as well as a variety of bank notes, scrip and tokens unique to the region.
As part of the Museum Showcase, the New Orleans-based World War II Museum will feature an exhibit that will include a short snorter from German prisoner-of-war camp Oflag 64 and a WWII-era Jeep.
Other items the Museum Showcase will display include the Idler/Bebee Class III Specimen 1804 Dollar, the 1792 Half Disme and the McDermott/Bebee Specimen 1913 Liberty Head “V” Nickel.
The ever-popular Collector Exhibits area gives ANA members the opportunity to share their collections and research with fellow hobbyists. Several competitive and noncompetitive exhibits will be displayed this year on a wide range of topics.
Many of the more than 500 numismatic dealers attending the show will provide free, informal appraisals for visitors who bring in their old coins and paper money.

“Coin Collecting 101,” an informal 30-minute presentation geared toward newcomers to the hobby, will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. May 9-10. The free course “Coin Collecting Basics” with ANA Numismatic Educator Rod Gillis will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 11.
Gillis will also team with ANA Governor Mike Ellis to present a two-day seminar, “Fundamentals of Grading U.S. Coins,” from May 7-8. The seminar will emphasize the fundamental principles of grading standards, analysis of a coin’s focal points, technical and market grading, how to determine initial signs of wear, and evaluating surface marks, strike, luster and eye appeal.
Brian Silliman will be the instructor for “Detecting Counterfeit U.S. Gold Coinage” May 7-8. Silliman’s seminar will use digital presentations and extensive hands-on coin exercises to teach students the difference between counterfeit and authentic U.S. gold coins. Money Talks, held May 10-11, lets ANA members discuss their research and ideas in a lecture format. Topics will include talks related to John Law and the Mississippi Bubble, the history of the Old U.S. Mint in New Orleans, and propaganda pieces used during the English Civil War.

Kids Zone and Treasure Trivia (booth 537) provide children and families with a variety of free activities and chances to collect prizes and gain a greater understanding of the hobby.
The U.S. Mint will be in attendance at booth 645.
At the ANA Area (booth 345), visitors can find out more about ANA memberships, educational opportunities and watch videos about the ANA and coverage of the show itself. ANA members can start a library account, check out books on site and see special items from the library’s archives. Visitors can also spin the prize wheel and enter for a chance to win 30 seconds in the Cash Cube.
