Q. David Bowers recieves ANA’s exemplary service award

The American Numismatic Association (ANA) Exemplary Service Award is presented for services performed on behalf of the ANA.

First conferred in 1991, the ANA Exemplary Service Award is presented to an individual, club or corporation, firm or association whose services to the ANA are deemed “above and beyond the call.” The 2003 recipient is Q. David Bowers.

Q. David Bowers–noted author, collector dealer and auctioneer, is one of the most recognized people in numismatics. At age 17, he was the youngest person to have a bourse table at the 1955 ANA convention in Omaha, Nebraska. He opened his first company under his own name in 1953 at age 15, and since then the Bowers name has been attached to more than 10 numismatic firms.

Perhaps more than for any modern-day numismatist, Bowers’ research and commentary as a cataloger, columnist and author demonstrate his outstanding and continued support of the numismatic community. With his casual style and sense of what is important, Bowers has educated thousands of collectors during his many decades in the hobby, effectively communicating both the historic and entertaining.

An award-winning writer, Bowers has authored more than 35 books, scores of articles and columns, including the two-volume, 1,744-page ANA Centennial History. In 2000 he received the Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for Excellence in Numismatic Writing, which is presented annually to a researcher, author or journalist in recognition of his or her contributions to numismatics.

A past president of the ANA, Bowers has earned the Association’s highest honors, including the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award for Distinguished Service. In 1994 he was inducted into the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame.

In bestowing the Exemplary Service Award on Q. David Bowers, the American Numismatic Association presents a certificate and expresses the sincere appreciation of its members.
