Scholars Discuss Money’s Role as a Communication Tool at Sundman Lecture Series in Milwaukee
Money talks – just ask lecturers for the Maynard Sundman/Littleton Coin Company Lecture Series on Aug. 9 during the 2007 ANA World’s Fair of Money® in Milwaukee, Wis. The symposium will explore the ways money serves as a means of communication now and throughout history.
Join some of today’s leading numismatic scholars as they present their most recent work at the symposium, named after Littleton Coin Company founder Maynard Sundman. The keynote address will be presented at 1 p.m. by Robert D. Evans, who will discuss “The SS Central America Treasure Speaks: Lessons from the Past, 1857-2007.”
Other lectures include:
- • 10 a.m. – “To Inform, to Move and to Charm: How Money Communicates” by James Benjamin, Ph.D., and Barbaranne Benjamin, Ph.D.
- • 11 a.m. – “From the ‘Wildman’ to the ‘True Native American’: Images of American Indians on Paper Money” by Heinz Tschachler, Ph.D.
- • noon – “African-American Miners and the Forgotten Silver Ingot of 1869” by Fred N. Holabird
- • 2 p.m. – “The Politics of Early European Coinage” by Douglas A. Mudd
- • 3 p.m. – “The Role of Ancient Coins in Mass Communication” by Joaquin Montero, Ph.D., and Luigi Manca, Ph.D.
- • 4 p.m. – “Confederate National Bank Notes” by Peter Huntoon, Ph.D.
Proceedings will be published in ANA Journal: Advanced Studies in Numismatics following the symposium.

The Milwaukee World’s Fair of Money will be held from Aug. 8-12 at the Midwest – Airlines Center. Clifford Mishler is serving as the event’s General Chairman, Chester L. Krause is the Honorary Chairman and Joseph Boling is Chief Exhibit Judge. The Milwaukee Numismatic Society, Numismatists of Wisconsin and the South Shore Coin Club are the event’s host clubs. Heritage Auction Galleries is the official auction company.
The World’s Fair of Money features the popular collector exhibit area, hundreds of dealers and many educational opportunities. Admission is free and the show is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. The collector exhibit area may be viewed Thursday through Sunday as early as 9 a.m.
