NATIONAL COIN WEEK ACTIVITY

Educators, here is your chance to celebrate National Coin Week with your students and provide them with an opportunity to earn a neat prize. The theme for this year’s National Coin Week is Coin & Country: Celebrating Civic Service. Coins are a window into our culture. There are many examples of coins that reflect our commitment to helping others.
One of our nation’s most attractive coins is the National Community Service dollar. Minted in 1996, the coin features Lady Liberty holding a shield and a book on which rests the Lamp of Knowledge. The design harkens back to the golden age of United States coins during the dawn of the 20th century.
Circulating Coins remind us of our commitment to civil service as well. The Kennedy half dollar reminds us when President John F. Kennedy told us to. “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
Have your students complete the assignment below for an opportunity to win a valuable prize. Every student who participates will receive an Indian Head cent that is over 100 years old. One youngster will receive a grand prize of a United States silver coin.
Student Assignment:
- Select a non-profit organization that can use your help or where you already volunteer. Examples include a soup kitchen, an animal shelter or your local library.
- Contact the organization and set up a time when you can volunteer for them for a few hours.
- Download the Verification Sheet. Have a member of the organization you volunteered for sign the sheet along with your parent/guardian after you performed your community service.
- On the Verification Sheet, recount in at least one hundred words about your experience and what you learned by volunteering.
- Send your sheet to the address below. You may include a photograph but it is not required.
