Tours at National Money Show Feature Arizona’s History and Beauty
Visitors to the 2008 Phoenix National Money Show, March 7-9, can sign up for scenic tours of the surrounding area. A tour of the Superstition Mountain Museum and a post-convention trip to the Sonoran Desert provide the opportunity to explore the region’s mysterious mining history and beautiful desert landscapes.
The Superstition Mountain Museum and Goldfield Mines, located 40 miles east of Phoenix, showcases the artifacts, history, geology and folklore of the Superstition Mountains, including the legend of the famous “Lost Dutchman Goldmine.” When Jacob Waltz (known as “Dutchman”) died in 1891, he took the secret whereabouts of his mine with him. Today, treasure hunters still scour the Superstition Mountains in search of Waltz’s mine and the treasures it holds. Visitors learn the history of the area’s native peoples, and see a gigantic, 20-stamp ore crusher. The tour, on Saturday, March 8 from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., departs by bus from the west doors of the Phoenix Convention Center. Registration is $20 through Feb. 10; $25 after that date.
The post-convention Sonoran Desert adventure tour will take you to the heart of the historic Goldfield Mountains to experience breathtaking landscapes, fascinating rock formations and exciting off-road action. Guides will share stories about the area as the tour four-wheels through chiseled trails. The trip features a nature walk, incredible photo opportunities and a crash course in survival skills such as eating cactus and catching local wildlife. The Sonoran Desert adventure tour, on Monday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., leaves from the west doors of the Phoenix Convention Center. The cost is $120 through Feb. 10 ($130 after that date), including transportation, beverages and lunch. The National Money Show is in the West Building of the Phoenix Convention Center. The show is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. James Mann is the event’s general chairman and Alan Herbert is the honorary chairman.
The Phoenix Coin Club and the Mesa Coin Club are the show’s host clubs. The honorary host clubs are the Arizona Territorial Coin Club and the Fountain Hills Coin Club.
