William H. “Bud” Nugent III, ANA Regional Coordinator, dies
William H. “Bud” Nugent III, an active coin collector and promoter of the American Numismatic Association (ANA), died January 4. He was 82 years of age. Services will be held January 9 in Panama City, Florida.
“With his passing, not only the Nugent family, but our numismatic hobby has lost a great volunteer, dedicated worker, and friend of the Association,” says ANA President John W. Wilson. “Bud was a special person who had a heart of gold and always got the job done. A super volunteer and ANA Regional Coordinator, he traveled throughout his home state of Florida and neighboring states, working tirelessly to promote the ANA and our numismatic hobby. On behalf of ANA members, I extend my sympathies and prayers to the entire Nugent family.”
After suffering a slight stroke just before Christmas, Nugent was in a local hospital when he died. A retired Air Force major, he served as a pilot in World War II and moved to Bay County, Florida, in 1958 from Great Falls, Montana.
Nugent joined the American Numismatic Association in 1992, when he was in his early 70s. Although he began his affiliation with the Association late in life, he immediately went to work, becoming an ANA district delegate the year he joined the Association and a regional coordinator for Florida and Puerto Rico in 1994. Nugent worked in his region to reinstate clubs that had let their ANA membership lapse and recruited 294 new individual and club members to the Association.
Nugent attended all ANA conventions after joining the organization and took an interest in meetings of the Association’s Board of Governors, frequently submitting detailed studies for the Board. He worked in the membership booth at ANA conventions and the ANA’s table at Florida United Numismatists (FUN) shows.
A former vice president of the Fort Walton Beach Coin Club, Nugent also served several terms as president of the Silver Sands Coin Club of Panama City. He also was a member of the Pensacola Numismatic Society and Bay County Stamp Club.
Recognized on numerous occasions for his efforts to promote numismatics, Nugent was named the ANA’s Outstanding Regional Coordinator in 1997, four times the recipient of the Al Baber Award for Membership Recruiting and two ANA Century Club Awards for recruiting 100 members. In 1999 he received an ANA Presidential Award and ANA’s Glenn Smedley Memorial Award.
Nugent is survived by his wife, Ruth; and daughter, Holly Nugent Gordon of Panama City. Graveside services are set for January 9 at Fort Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida. Contributions can be made to the Gulf Coast Community College Scholarship Fund or to the American Heart Association in memory of William Nugent III. Funeral arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, 214 Airport Road, Panama City, Florida.
