‘Wish Upon a Bill’ contest to benefit children’s hospital

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia will benefit from a contest to create the best bank note design at the American Numismatic Association (ANA) World’s Fair of Money 2000.

Visitors to the Philadelphia show, August 9-11, will have an opportunity to show off their numismatic talents by designing their own paper money while supporting the city’s Children’s Hospital, which cares for sick and battered youngsters.

Entries will be judged on concept, not artistic ability, and the designer of the winning submission will receive $1,000.

The “Wish Upon a Bill” contest is sponsored by the ANA and Krause Publications numismatic periodicals – Numismatic News, Bank Note Reporter, World Coin News, Coins and Coin Prices.

Says ANA President H. Robert Campbell, “The ANA wants to give something back to Philadelphia for hosting our show. In addition to bringing attention to numismatics, our convention and the people in the hobby will be remembered for helping the Philadelphia children who need it the most.”

Young and old alike are invited to submit designs for bank notes. All notes must be created for use in the United States; acceptable denominations are $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. An optional donation is suggested, equivalent to the value of the submitted note. For example, those entering a sketch for a $5 bill can include a $5 contribution in real U.S. funds (check or money order made payable to Children’s Hospital, or charge to American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa).

The designs will be evaluated by a panel of numismatic experts: Chris Madden, designer of the back of the new $20 bill for the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing; David Harper, editor of Numismatic News, Bank Note Reporter and World Coin News; and ANA Executive Director Edward C. Rochette.

An official entry form can be found on page 794 of the July issue of The Numismatist. All entries must be received by Krause Publications by September 1, 2000. Send entries to “Wish Upon a Bill Contest,” 700 E. State St., Iola, WI 54990-0001

Entries are limited to one per person; participants under the age of 18 must secure the permission of a parent or legal guardian.

The officers, staff and families of the ANA and Krause Publications may submit designs but are ineligible to win the $1,000 prize.
